Hibiya Park

In the 33rd year of the Meiji era (1900), the Hibiya Park Landscaping Committee was established by Seiroku Honda, Chokutoku Ishiguro, Hayato Fukuba, Keijiro Ozawa, and others. In the 34th year of the Meiji era (1901), Seiroku Honda, who had studied in Germany, led the design and planning of the park. Honda utilized his study abroad experience to design the park as a German-style garden but retained the Shinji Pond, which was left after filling in the moat of Edo Castle, to preserve Japanese elements. Construction began in April of the 35th year of the Meiji era (1902), and the park officially opened on June 1 of the following year.
