[Tokyo/Hie Shrine] A shrine with sacred monkeys

Hie Shrine is located in Akasaka, Tokyo. It is worshipped as the guardian deity of Edo Castle, and its deity is Oyamakui-no-kami. He is considered to be the god of the mountains and is affectionately known as "Sanno-san." There are no lion-dog statues on the grounds, but instead there are monkeys! As the deity, Oyamakui-no-kami, is the god of the mountains, the prevailing theory is that the monkeys that live in the mountains were made to be messengers of the deity, but the truth is unknown.
