Visit the New Taipei City Martyrs' Shrine

The Martyrs' Shrine is a temple dedicated to soldiers, police officers, and civilians who have shown great loyalty and are worthy of admiration. Located next to the Hobe Fort in Tamsui District, the shrine is surrounded by ancient trees and lush greenery. It is the site of the historic Battle of Tamsui during the Sino-French War. During the Japanese occupation of Taiwan, a Shinto shrine was built in 1939 to honor Emperor Meiji. After Taiwan's restoration, the shrine fell into disrepair and became a ruin. In 1974, New Taipei City demolished it and rebuilt it on the original foundation, preserving the original scale of the Shinto shrine but adopting Chinese palace-style architecture. It became the New Taipei City Martyrs' Shrine, enshrining many anti-Japanese martyrs. The shrine is surrounded by ancient pine trees, and standing under the archway, you can listen to the sound of the pines and gaze at Guanyin Mountain, one of the eight scenic spots of Tamsui, known as 'Pine Waves at the Martyrs' Shrine.'
