Wax Castle Festival in Sakon Nakhon Province

The "Wax Castle" does not refer to a castle made from bee hives, but rather derives its name from the use of "Ton Phueng," a natural material, to create miniature castle replicas. According to the beliefs of the people of Sakon Nakhon, offering a wax castle is a way to pay homage to the Buddha and dedicate merit to deceased ancestors. 🎉 Activities During the Festival The Wax Castle Festival consists of two main parts: • 14th day of the waxing moon, 11th lunar month: Wax castles are gathered for a one-day, one-night celebration. • 15th day of the waxing moon, 11th lunar month: The wax castles are paraded and offered at Wat Phra That Choeng Chum Worawihan. The parade is beautifully organized, featuring various traditional performances by cultural councils from all districts, such as the six-tribe costumes, ancient boxing dances, Phu Tai (Phu Thai) dances, traditional music, and demonstrations of the Sakon Nakhon way of life. 📅 Schedule for 2024 In 2024, the Wax Castle Festival will be held from October 12–17, featuring activities such as: • Visiting the wax castle-making community (October 1–15) • Worship ceremony at Phra That Choeng Chum (October 8) • Wax castle parade and light and sound show (October 16) • Almsgiving on the end of Buddhist Lent Day (October 17) The main venues include Wat Phra That Choeng Chum Worawihan, the King Rama V Memorial Plaza, and the Sakon Nakhon Provincial Government Center. ✨ Highlights Not to Be Missed This festival showcases the community's collaborative effort in crafting intricate wax castles, along with a variety of traditional cultural performances.
