[Rebun Island] How to enjoy Rebun Island, Hokkaido when it rains ☂

Date visited: End of June 2023 Rebun Island, the northernmost inhabited island, is famous for its rich nature that is different from the mainland. For that reason, many people come here for the purpose of hiking and touring to enjoy nature. However, many people may be worried about what to do if it rains. So I will explain based on my own experience! [How to get there] Since there are no airplanes to Rebun Island, you can visit by ferry from Wakkanai Port or Rishiri Island. There is only one port, "Kafuko Port". When I went there, there was a campaign where one-way ferries were free, so please check it out when you go! [Accommodation & Food] It is convenient because there are many accommodations and restaurants around Kafuko Port. You can stay at a guesthouse relatively cheaply. At night, there are mainly izakayas and snack bars, but the atmosphere is suitable for children. There is also a supermarket, and I bought a plastic umbrella (about 500 yen). [Sightseeing] It is possible to go hiking even if it is raining. There is a hiking course called "Momoiwa Observatory Course" that can be reached on foot from Kafuka Port. Please note that umbrellas are prohibited (raincoats are recommended) and that the wind is stronger than the rain. Part of the course is paved with boardwalks, so the mud wasn't too much of a problem. There were tour groups on the short section to the observation deck, so why not try it even in a little rain? A few minutes by bus is "Canaria Park," famous as a filming location for movies. However, please note that in bad weather, Rishiri Fuji is often not visible. You can enjoy the hot springs even in bad weather. It is located in the middle of a port town, so even if your accommodation has a bath, be sure to go! #hotsprings #remoteislandtrip #hiking

Rebun Island Trekking Momoiwa Observatory Course This is the most famous trekking course where you can enjoy the floating island of flowers, Rebun Island, where alpine plants bloom. It takes just under 10 minutes by bus from the ferry terminal to the Momoiwa trailhead. From the Momoiwa trailhead, it is a 5.3km (2 hours) journey. You can see most of the flowers blooming on Rebun Island and Mount Rishiri. They say that the best time to see them is June to July. (I went on a bad trip at a bad time, so there weren't many flowers in bloom 😂) The trekking course starts with a slight hill climb, but after that there are only a few gentle ups and downs. Even those who are not confident in their legs can enjoy trekking with peace of mind. However, be careful of strong winds, so you need to take measures to avoid being blown away when you go trekking! #Remote Island Trip #Rebun Island #Northernmost Island

Rebun Island

Rebun Island Located in the Sea of Japan, 60km west of Wakkanai in the northern part of Hokkaido, it is also known as the floating island of flowers because more than 200 kinds of alpine plants bloom from 0 meters above sea level. Rebun does not have an airport, so the only way to get there is by ferry. From Wakkanai to Kafuka Port → about 1 hour 55 minutes From Oshidomari on Rishiri Island to Kafuka Port → about 40 minutes Access is less convenient than Rishiri Island, which has an airport. However, I felt that Rebun is superior in terms of the number of local specialties (sea lion meat buns, skewers, kelp buns, etc.) and the fun, cuteness, and deliciousness of the souvenir lineup compared to Rishiri Island. Rebun has a wide variety of accommodations! The business format may have changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is a famous youth hotel called "Momoiwaso" where all the employees and guests sing and dance Another famous place is "Minshuku Sukoton Misaki, an inn where you can see the seals." The inn is located at the end of Cape Sukoton, in a small gap between land and sea, and the vast ocean is right in front of you. (What would they do if a tsunami came?) As mentioned at the beginning of the article, when you think of Rebun Island, you probably think of flowers and seafood. But that's not all it has to offer. It's hard to get to, but it's just as fun as its location. If you're planning a trip to the north of Japan, be sure to include Rebun Island as one of your options. #Remote Island Trips #Gourmet #Rebun Island

Mount Rebun

Mt. Rebun Climbing Course The bus stop called Uchiji is the entrance. Some lodgings will provide a shuttle service to the trailhead. Mt. Rebun is 490m above sea level. It is about 4.5km one way, and takes 2 hours one way. If you are used to climbing, it will take about 3 hours round trip. However, you do not need heavy climbing equipment, and it is a course for beginners that can be tackled in sneakers. (Unlike other trekking courses, there are no flowers) The climbing course is just uphill. If you just keep climbing the mountain path, you will see what looks like the summit, but this is commonly known as the false summit (it was so cold that I almost gave up). But the summit beyond that is spectacular! We were lucky to have good weather, so we could see the blue sea, the clear sky, Mt. Rishiri, and Sakhalin in the distance. According to the locals, it is often foggy, so we were really lucky. The rice balls we ate at the top were also amazing. And Rebun is also beautiful at sunset! The ocean lit up by the setting sun was so beautiful I couldn't help but take a picture. #RemoteIslandTrip #RebunIsland
