Port Arthur Historic Site: A Journey Back in Time

The first thing that stands out when you walk in is the Penitentiary, the main prison that once held convicts. Its sheer size is impressive, and even the remaining ruins tell the story of the harsh lives of those imprisoned. Every building here is steeped in history, from the Commandant's House, which showcases the lifestyle of high-ranking officers, to the Separate Prison, filled with silence and isolation. We learned that this place used silence as a form of punishment instead of physical punishment, which was quite unsettling. Besides exploring the buildings, taking a boat ride to the Isle of the Dead is another highlight. We saw the cemetery where over 1,000 convicts and officers are buried. This journey creates an eerie atmosphere and makes you feel the untold stories of the past. Unfortunately, we couldn't go ashore during our visit. What makes a visit to Port Arthur special is the blend of history and nature. The stunning landscape around the site makes you feel that this place was both beautiful and brutal at the same time. The entrance fees to the Port Arthur Historic Site vary depending on the package you choose. Generally, the Basic Entry Pass includes access to various sites within the area, guided tours, and a short boat trip around the Isle of the Dead (without landing).
