That year, I went to Ningbo and came across Baoguo Temple unexpectedly. I had only heard of mortise and tenon joints, brackets, and flying eaves, but when I stood in the temple, it felt as if the wind of the Song Dynasty a thousand years ago was lingering around me. I kept looking up while sitting on the steps of the corridor... That was my first close contact with Song Dynasty structure. 📜The Main Hall was rebuilt in the sixth year of Dazhong Xiangfu in the Northern Song Dynasty (1013). It is the oldest and best-preserved wooden Buddhist building south of the Yangtze River. It has a unique structure and magnificent appearance. In the 23rd year of Emperor Kangxi's reign in the Qing Dynasty (1684), a double eaves was added to create a hip roof. 🌈Main features of the Mahavira Hall The depth of the plan (13.38 meters) is greater than the width (11.83 meters), forming a vertical rectangular shape; three hollow caissons are wonderfully placed on the front ceiling; there is a complex bracket structure; four sections of cooperative melon-shaped columns with obvious side feet; the beams and lintels are made in the form of moon beams with rolled brakes on both shoulders, etc. These are close to or consistent with the Song Dynasty's "Construction Methods", inheriting some architectural styles from the Tang Dynasty, and provide valuable physical examples for the study of Song Dynasty architecture. These unique designs make the structure of the hall extremely scientific. In addition to maintaining air circulation to prevent cobwebs and dust from forming in the hall and keeping it clean all year round, the entire hall does not use a single iron nail. Only the ingenious connection between the brackets and the precise mortise and tenon technology are used to firmly combine various components together to support the weight of the entire hall roof of more than 50 tons. The others are mostly buildings from the Qing Dynasty. In 1983, three halls from the Ming Dynasty were moved in, and in 1984, two pagodas from the Tang Dynasty were moved in. Now, Baoguo Temple has become a group of wooden structures from the Tang, Song, Ming, Qing and Republic of China periods. 🐝Discovered In the mid-1950s, when all industries were just beginning to develop, three students from Nanjing Institute of Technology (now Southeast University) formed a summer internship team and went to Ningbo to conduct a survey of folk houses and ancient buildings in eastern Zhejiang.
