As for TACO RICE, its story begins after World War II, during the period when U.S. military forces were stationed in Okinawa. In 1984, a restaurant owner in Kin Town decided to cater to the American soldiers' longing for the taste of home by substituting rice for tortillas, using locally available ingredients. To his surprise, the dish became a hit and has since evolved into a cultural staple in Okinawa. One notable spot to try TACO RICE is Pico Shokudo, located near Shuri Castle. This small yet famous restaurant has been transformed from a traditional old apartment into a cozy eatery with only about ten seats. Despite its size, it has become a beloved destination for both locals and tourists. The dish features spiced ground meat, shredded lettuce, corn chips, mayonnaise, rice, and hot sauce. At first bite, it resembles a taco, but as you chew, the sweetness and texture of the rice create a unique experience.
