Zenkoji Temple Niomon Gate: Are the Nio statues positioned backwards?

This is the first gate welcoming visitors to Zenkoji Temple. The placement of the Kao statues is reversed, with the A-shaped statue on the left and the Un-shaped statue on the right, and two other Buddha statues with different designs enshrined behind them.
