The city of Mombasa is one you shouldn’t skip if visiting Kenya. It is a vibrant, historical place and cultural hub that cannot be missed if you want to experience Kenya. Mombasa Island can feel chaotic but other areas of the city can offer much needed tranquility. When visiting Mombasa’s old town, we were particularly warned to be careful of small theft/pickpockets. However, the local government seems to be trying to make it safer for tourists and has reinforced the presence of security officers.
