【Kyoto】World Heritage Site: Tenryu-ji Temple in Arashiyama

Tenryu-ji Temple in Arashiyama, recognized as a World Heritage Site, is home to the Sogenchi Garden, a nationally designated historic site and special scenic spot. This garden, which retains the essence of its design by Muso Soseki approximately 700 years ago, is particularly famous for its stunning autumn foliage, attracting numerous visitors. Regardless of the season, the temple offers breathtaking views: cherry blossoms in spring, lush greenery in summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and snow-covered landscapes in winter. One of Tenryu-ji's highlights is the "Dragon Gazing in All Directions" (Unryu-zu) painted on the ceiling of the Dharma Hall. This dragon appears to be staring at you no matter where you stand, hence its name. Tenryu-ji is the head temple of the Tenryu-ji branch of the Rinzai Zen sect. Its principal deity is the Shakyamuni Triad. The temple was founded in 1339 (Ryakuo 2) by Muso Soseki at the request of Ashikaga Takauji to console the spirit of Emperor Go-Daigo. Although the temple has suffered eight major fires since its establishment, the current buildings were reconstructed during the Meiji era.
