Komakiyama Castle in Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture, was first built by Oda Nobunaga in 1563. When Nobunaga started to move to Kyoto, he moved from his original Kiyosu Castle to Komakiyama Castle to conquer Mino (present-day Gifu). Until then, typical castles were defended by moats and earthworks, but Nobunaga was the first to incorporate "stone walls," which became the basis for castle construction throughout the country.
