The first great mosque in the Maghreb

Kairouan is known as the "City of 50 Mosques" and is the spiritual home of the Tunisian people. The Great Mosque of Kairouan is undoubtedly the oldest Islamic religious building in the Muslim West. It was built in 670 AD, during the first incorporation of Ifriqiya into the Muslim Empire. As a World Heritage Site, the Great Mosque of Kairouan is a unique monument that perfectly conceals a unique architectural "fusion" - the building materials are mostly from ancient sites of different periods before the Islamic conquest, but other architectural forms such as minarets are influenced by the East, and the whole is not lacking in elegance.
