Film Archive launches "Hong Kong Film and Comics" exhibition

The Hong Kong Film Archive (Hong Kong Film Archive) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will launch the "Image and Comics" exhibition in the Archive's Exhibition Hall from February 24 to October 8, allowing movie and comics fans to reminisce about their fond memories. This exhibition will review Hong Kong films inspired or adapted from comics since the 1930s, leading the audience to explore the influence of comic works on the film world. These films include the three major series adapted from Chinese comics, namely "Mr. Wang", "King of Oolong" and "Old Master Q"; adapted from Japanese comics, such as "A Man Should Enter the Bottle" (1994), "Initial D" (2005), and "City Hunter" (1993); and films adapted from popular local comics, such as the "Young and Dangerous" series, the "Feel 100%" romance series, and the "Feng Yun" series of martial arts comics. The exhibition analyzes the similarities and differences between the film and the comic book in terms of plot, characterization and modeling, and explores how filmmakers incorporate the essence of the original work into the creation of the film. In addition to adapting comics into movies, some comics are also presented to the audience as animated movies, such as "The Storm Riders" (2008) and "Sherlock Holmes: Escape Plan" (2019). Comic manuscripts, movie scripts, character design drawings and movie promotional materials of some movies will be on display. Movie and comic fans should not miss it. Another highlight of the exhibition is the large comic wall in the exhibition hall which consists of works from several classic Hong Kong comic series.
