The fortress sits up on a hill above Chania, and once you’re up there you get these wide, open panoramas of the city, the sea, and the mountains in the background. The structure itself is mostly in ruins, but you can still see parts of the old walls and get a sense of how it once stood watch over the area. It doesn’t take long to walk around, but the quiet atmosphere and the scenery give it a special feel. Even if you’re not deeply into history, the location makes this place a highlight. Standing there, looking out over the landscape, you realize why it was built in the first place — and why it’s still worth visiting today.
