Spring in Cambridge: Where Ivy Grows and Rivers Flow

#springwander There’s something about spring in Cambridge that slows time down. The air softens, and the city seems to breathe a little deeper. I arrived just as the cherry blossoms began their quiet bloom along Jesus Green, petals flickering like pale pink confetti in the breeze. Wandering through the old colleges, I was struck again by how history and nature coexist so seamlessly here. At King’s College Chapel, the sun streamed through stained glass onto ancient stone, and outside, daffodils nodded under the watchful gaze of proud gargoyles. Punts glided lazily along the River Cam, some steered expertly, others spinning slowly with laughter from tourists trying their hand at tradition. I joined a group near the Mathematical Bridge, where a student guide spun tales of Newton, legends, and impossible engineering. Afternoons were for bookstores and cafés. I tucked into hot tea and scones at Fitzbillies, letting the sugar and cream do their magic while scribbling thoughts in a worn notebook. In Heffers, I lost track of time among volumes of poetry and well-thumbed novels. As evening fell, the spires caught the last of the golden light, and the streets felt hushed, like they were holding secrets. A walk along the Backs, the path soft with fallen petals, reminded me why I came: not to check places off a list, but to feel something still and beautiful. Cambridge in spring is not loud or dramatic. It whispers. It lingers. And it stays with you.
