Steeped in academic charm 📖 Emmanuel College, Cambridge!

#cambridgetrips Emmanuel College, founded in 1584 by Sir Walter Mildmay, Chancellor of the Exchequer to Queen Elizabeth I, is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Cambridge. The college was established on the site of a former Dominican priory, utilizing existing structures such as the friars’ church nave, which was repurposed as the College’s dining hall. Architectural Highlights: • Chapel: Designed by Sir Christopher Wren and completed in 1677, the chapel stands as a significant architectural feature of the college. • Gardens and Grounds: Emmanuel is renowned for its beautiful gardens, including a pond that was originally part of the priory’s fishponds. Visiting Emmanuel College: Visitors are welcome to explore the college grounds. However, during the summer examination period, access may be restricted, with only Front Court and the Chapel remaining open. It’s advisable to check in at the Porters’ Lodge upon arrival for up-to-date information and to ensure the college is open to visitors. Notable Alumni: Emmanuel College has a distinguished list of alumni, including: • John Harvard: Founder of Harvard University. • Thomas Young: Polymath known for his work in deciphering the Rosetta Stone. • Sebastian Faulks: Renowned novelist. • Graham Chapman: Member of the Monty Python comedy group. For those interested in exploring one of Cambridge’s historic colleges, Emmanuel offers a blend of rich history, notable architecture, and serene gardens.
