The story untold at Brandenburg Gate

#europeanarchitecture #100waysoftravel The Brandenburg Gate, erected in 18th Century under the orders of King Frederick William II of Prussia, is the former city gate from Berlin to Brandenburg an Der Havel. The structure was built between 1788 to 1791 and has underwent many major occasions and events like the Prussian Revolutions, World War I and II, the German division, Cold War and reunification. It stands in between Pariser Platz and Platz des 18. After World War II, Berlin was divided onto east and west and this gate was set as the border between the two, and a wall was erected in 1961 to separate both territories. In the 1989 revolutions, pedestrians can be seen standing on top of the wall to demand the tearing of it as part of the reunification process. The Gate was accessible by cars in the 90s but was pedestrianized in 2005. Today, this gate is seen as a symbol of peace and unity as well as the rememberence of the tumultuous histories of Germany and Europe.
