Abu Simbel Temples

Located in southern Egypt, the Abu Simbel Temples were built in the 13th century BC by Pharaoh Ramesses II for himself and his queen Nefertari. The main temple is dedicated to Ramesses II and the three great Egyptian gods, with four giant statues in front of the temple showcasing the majesty of the pharaoh. The smaller temple is dedicated to Nefertari and the goddess Hathor. In the 1960s, the temples were relocated to a higher location to avoid being submerged by Lake Nasser. The temples are most famous for the "Sun Festival" on February 22 and October 22 each year, when sunlight passes through the temple to illuminate the statues in the inner sanctuary, symbolizing the protection of the gods.
