Hambantota Hotels with Hot Tub

We stayed for 3 nights at Uga Chena Huts. It was a great amount of time - and 4 nights might just be better to thoroughly enjoy the property as well as Yala. The room was such a great respite after the crazy Yala drives. So much space to sprawl out. Such a comfy bed and pillows. Great shower and pressure. The deck with pool was lovely and really enjoyed hearing the waves from the ocean and the birds. Only criticism is the toilet room - it needs a roof for privacy - no one wants to hear their loved one’s issues going on in there! The service was spot on! They worked so hard to make eveyone happy and cared for. A shout out to Janith our ranger - he was so knowledgeable and made the drives fun and tailored them to my needs after I said no more bumpy “main road” of Yala - so helpful! (And on that note make sure to book Spa appointments! Your sore body will thank you after those safari drives) Tea in the spa was excellent! The food - amazing! Always ready to cater to our needs when we needed to change it up because of preferences. I will remember the fluffy truffle eggs from breakfast forever!! Best breakfasts I’ve ever had. And the quantity of food - you will never go hungry - ever! I had to start just having soup for lunch to save room for Safari snacks which is actually just lunch to go - and so good to! I can’t say enough or praise the property and people enough - wonderful in every sense. Oh and an elephant even made a visit to the car park where you board the safari vehicles as well as wild boar to top it all off! Thanks so much Uga Chena Huts!!

Picked up from the airport, very nice to be so unburdened. We were welcomed with a delicious fruit juice and a nice breakfast, nothing is missing. Within a few minutes you are on a beautiful beach, very impressive! In the evening we enjoyed a night walk accompanied by a guide from the turtle watch. An absolute must! On request you can take the tuk-tuk to another beach bar near Tangalle or a guesthouse / hotel with a swimming pool on the beach where you can stay for a day. Thanks Mr. Rukman, Taxa and your wife for everything! So are you looking for a nice place? We recommend you to go here!

After staying at Amangalla, which was absolutely fantastic, we came to Amanwella. We were a little apprehensive after having had such a great time at the first hotel. But Amanwella was great, too! The architecture by famous Australian, Kerry Hill, is stunning and smack dab in the middle of a dreamy tropical beach! The infinity pool cantilevers over the serene and gorgeous view, with beautiful sunsets a-plenty. We enjoyed spending time in the attractive library, read and saw books on local history, to Nixon. The whole place was immaculate. We really enjoyed our safari to Yala National Park. Rujitha and an our driver Chummly accompanied us and they were awesome! Thank you guys! We had a blast! We saw monkeys, elephants and even a leopard! We got very lucky. We enjoyed the food and the people who served us in the two restaurants and the people at the front desk and even the tuk tuk drivers. We happily did yoga everyday! We also went up to the rock temple. Definitely got our steps in for the month, but it was worth it. Our room was large, comfortable, and beautiful with a great view of the ocean. We can’t say enough about the place. It’s relaxing and beautiful and the people who work there are both well trained but also kind. If you go, don’t forget to eat the ice cream! Honestly the best we’ve ever had. We also took a great cooking class with the Executive Sous Chef, who was patient, friendly and knowledgeable. So fun and interesting. We enjoyed the musicians, too! We had fun meeting a few of the other guests, and ended up having very interesting conversations with people from the other side of the world. But it’s also a place you could go and if you wanted to , you could just spend time quietly by yourself. Highly recommend Amanwella. We will treasure our memories forever.

The beach at the hotel is too wavy to swim and can only bask in the sun. But not far away, there is another public beach more than 100 meters, where you can swim. There are many choices for buffet breakfast and dinner, and the taste is good. Of course, there are occasional mistakes, such as grilled too raw beef shoulder. There are very few things for children to entertain. There is a game room where you can draw, watch TV, play games, etc., but the maintenance is not very good. The service is generally good, ushered in. However, there are more ingredients for the show, and some details need attention. Overall, the price / performance ratio is average, and it should be done.

The hotel is not that simple to get to. Once you leave a nice hard top road, you have to drive down a long dirt road for about 10 mins to get to the hotel itself. That road can become a bit flooded if it rains hard - as it did on one day we were there - and that can prevent some guests getting in and out of the hotel. We’d had a lovely quiet evening meal one night and only found out afterwards that there had been a large group due in but couldn’t get down the road. Generally, it’s ‘normal’ vehicles and buses that bring people but, on occasion, a 4x4 would be better. On the days we arrived and left the roads were passable but you could see how they become easily impassable with rivulets running across it. The hotel though is lovely. The old one was washed away in the tsunami but the replacement looks strongly built, with its exposed concrete and stone construction there for all to see. That doesn’t make it cold and like a factory though. Far from it. It feels like it belongs where it is and its appropriate for a climate that varied between sun, wind and heavy rain whilst we were there. Whilst there are bedrooms on the ground floor (plus the gym and spa), most of the hotel’s common spaces are on the top floor, where reception, the bar and a la carte restaurant are. The main restaurant is one floor down, which has a nice view from the verandas around the outside. We had drinks in the bar on a couple of evenings, choosing to sit on the covered balcony as the indoor space - complete with pool table - whilst lovely was rather cold. The cocktails we had were really well made and come with our recommendation. We didn’t try the a la carte restaurant. Frankly, there was no need to from a food perspective. It was excellent all the time in the main one. The hotel tends to get large groups stay, who like to sit together (and create quite a noise), so the main restaurant can get quite noisy. The a la carte would offer a break from that as it’s in its own, quiet space. We genuinely couldn’t fault the food at the hotel. Breakfast always had a large choice ranging from cold offerings, cereal and salad, through to traditional Sri Lankan and hot western options. Tea and coffee was to order whilst you helped yourself to juice. The story was similar for evening meals too. If anything, evening meals catered less for western palettes and more for the Chinese guests that frequent the hotel. There were always lots of local Sri Lankan dishes too, which were simply delicious. All the hot food was outside the main restaurant space, under cover, with much of it being cooked in front of you. The cold starters and desserts were indoors. I have to say, one odd highlight was the soups. Every night there were 2 soups on offer and they were really good. I did have a tiny bug bear sometimes, which correlated with the busiest nights. That was the staff were a little too keen to clear plates. Probably the best hotel you will find in Yala area. Super friendly staff, they make you fell at home. The rooms are big, super clean, welcoming and with a nice swimming pool view! The bed is super confortable as well. You will find also everything you need in the toilet (hair dryer, shampoo, body wash, soup ans even a shower cap). The restaurant have delicious food and very good service. The swmmingpool is super nice and clean. Staff 5 stars. We arrived super early in the morning and they let us go in the room without charging early check-in. I really recommend this hotel !

What a wonderful spot! Towards the end of Marakolliya Beach near to the turtle feeding area and a short tuk tuk ride from the main drag of Tangalle lies the Waves Chalets. Small and peaceful with the constant sound of waves and right on the beach (breakfast and dinner was had on a picnic table in sight of the sea) this little gem is the perfect spot for some R&R. Mahesh and his team are the perfect hosts and the owner speaks excellent English. The rooms are spotlessly clean, the towels and bedding smell nice, AC cools the rooms down and while the water is cool because it’s so warm it never seems cold. The food was exceptionally tasty and catered to us being vegetarian. The mattress on my bed was also probably one of the most comfortable I have ever slept on! Would definitely come and stay again.
