To be Haitian is to know that our freedom is a birthright. To be Black is to know the taste, smell, sound, and depth of this freedom, and to carry it in our blood and bones. To be Black and Haitian, today, is to reconcile this truth with the reality of loss, grief, and chaos, as well as an unwavering sense of hope and desire. Eritaj: The Story of the Land and the Voice of the Ancestors attempts to expose the nature of this duality and the process of such a reconciliation for the self, for the family, and for the community in our day-to-day lives. Eritaj: The Story of the Land and the Voice of the Ancestors uses dance and embodied storytelling to revisit and reframe common scenarios of displacement, poverty, abuse, and misery often associated with Haiti’s descent to instability and insecurity. Eritaj does this while uniquely highlighting the lived connections between Haitians and other communities of the African Diaspora Information Source: Robenson Dance Haïti | eventbrite

Modernism in Irish Women's Contemporary Writing: The Stubborn Mode (Oxford UP, 2024) examines the tangled relationship between contemporary Irish women writers and literary modernism. In the early decades of the twenty-first century, Irish women's fiction has drawn widespread critical acclaim and commercial success, with a surprising number of these works being commended for their innovative redeployment of literary tactics drawn from early twentieth-century literary modernism. But this strategy is not a new one. Across more than a century, writers from Kate O'Brien to Sally Rooney have manipulated and remade modernism to draw attention to the vexed nature of female privacy, exploring what unfolds when the amorphous nature of private consciousness bumps up against external ordering structures in the public world. Living amid the tenaciously conservative imperatives of church and state in Ireland, their female characters are seen to embrace, reject, and rework the ritual of prayer, the fixity of material objects, the networks of the digital world, and the ordered narrative of the book. The writers studied here, among them Elizabeth Bowen, Edna O'Brien, Anne Enright, Anna Burns, Claire-Louise Bennett, and Eimear McBride, employ the modernist mode in part to urge readers to recognize that female interiority, the prompt for many of the movement's illustrious formal experiments, continues to provide a crucial but often overlooked mechanism to imagine ways around and through seemingly intransigent social problems, such as class inequity, political violence, and sexual abuse. Paige Reynolds, Professor of English at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, Massachusetts, publishes on the subjects of modernism, drama and performance, and modern and contemporary Irish literature. She is author of Modernism in Irish Women’s Contemporary Writing: The Stubborn Mode (Oxford UP, 2024) and Modernism, Drama, and the Audience for Irish Spectacle (Cambridge UP, 2007). She also has edited the collections Modernist Afterlives in Irish Literature and Culture (Anthem Press, 2016), The New Irish Studies (Cambridge UP, 2020), and (with Eric Falci) Irish Literature in Transition, Volume 6, 1980-2020 (Cambridge UP, 2020). Paige will be in conversation with Emily C. Bloom, Public Humanities Fellow at Sarah Lawrence College. Her debut memoir, I Cannot Control Everything Forever: A Memoir of Motherhood, Science, and Art was published with St. Martin’s Press in 2024. Her first book, The Wireless Past: Anglo-Irish Writers and the BBC, 1931-1968 (Oxford, 2016) examines the role of public broadcasting in shaping twentieth-century literature. Her articles have appeared in Public Books, Eire-Ireland, The Irish Times, and elsewhere. Information Source: Glucksman Ireland House NYU | eventbrite

François Garaude, from a quiet bourgeois family in Paris, felt the shock deeply. May '68 called him to adventure, and at 16, he left his scandalized family behind, hitchhiking across Central Asia. Each day brought new challenges, dangers, or remarkable discoveries. In India, François found a world where spirituality explained and shaped life. The sacred temples reminded him of the Romanesque churches of his childhood, where every detail held meaning. His journey became a spiritual quest, but illness brought him back to France. From this experience, he gained a deep desire to find meaning in everything. And in his pockets, he carried home a topaz and a moonstone—his first talismans. Come behind the scenes with Rosena Sammi for a deeply personal look at the creative process behind David Michael Jewels. This engaging conversation (between two New Zealanders!) will bring some of Michael's favorite pieces to life, revealing their inspiration and why his meticulous approach, from the first watercolor rendering to the microscopic stone setting, is critical to his extraordinary work. Rosena Sammi designed and crafted jewelry collections under her namesake line for more than a decade. Her jewelry was sold at all the leading department stores, worn by A-List celebrities such as Rihanna and Blake Lively and was featured in the likes of Vogue. However, she grew disenchanted with the rise of fast fashion and the lack of diversity in the jewelry industry. So was born ‘The Jewelry Edit', a multi-brand e-commerce jewelry boutique carrying over 75 different designers, driven by a mission of social responsibility and diversity. Prior to her roles in fashion, Rosena practiced corporate law for almost a decade at leading law firms in New Zealand and New York. Rosena is an Adjunct Professor of Law at Parsons School of Design. Michael Robinson is a New Zealand born artist who creates single author jewels from his studio in Boston, Massachusetts. Single author means no other person touches the jewelry created by Michael. There is no workshop of assistants and designers, there is no casting or computer aided design. Michael hand forges each piece of metal and sculpts the jewelry, completing it with hand-set diamonds and gemstones. Michael chooses to work this way because it is important to him that anything he signs his name to is truly and authentically of his hand. Each November, NYC Jewelry Week proudly presents ‘The Week,’ a 7-day celebration dedicated to the art of jewelry. Join the Grolier Club for a conversation with David M. Rubenstein about the public exhibition Abraham Lincoln: His Life in Print, which runs until December 28, 2024, in our ground-floor Exhibition Hall. Note: This is an in-person event. If you wish to register instead for the live webcast, please visit this page. In many ways, books made Abraham Lincoln. He became a lawyer through self-disciplined study, won the White House through the concurrent rise of American popular publishing, and remains one of the most written about figures over the 160 years since his death. Abraham Lincoln: His Life in Print uses original printings of books and ephemera to create a sweeping, conceptual portrait of the man. The exhibition features important editions of Lincoln’s greatest accomplishments, including the Emancipation Proclamation, the Gettysburg Address, the Cooper Union Speech, his debates with Stephen A. Douglass, and many others. More than 150 objects describe the life of Lincoln as he was born in the American West, captivated by literature, shaped by the portentous 1850s, tested by the American Civil War, responsible for the end of slavery, and murdered and mourned at the age of 56. Featuring materials from the David M. Rubenstein Americana Collection, the exhibition is curated by Mazy Boroujerdi, special advisor to the collection, and will be accompanied by a catalogue published by the Grolier Club. David M. Rubenstein is co-founder and co-chairman of the private equity firm The Carlyle Group and is the principal owner of the Baltimore Orioles baseball team. His published books include The Highest Calling: Conversations on the American Presidency (2024) and The American Story: Conversations with Master Historians (2019). His philanthropic activities have assisted the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Arlington House, and the U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial (Iwo Jima). His collection has included the Bay Psalm Book (1640, the first book printed in America) and the Magna Carta (1297, one of the most important legal documents in the history of democracy). Visit the exhibition online and view case images on Flickr. Photo Credit: Cover of Abraham Lincoln: His Life in Print (Grolier Club, from Marquand Books). Cover design by Ryan Polich. Grolier Club Members If you are a Grolier Club member, please register yourself and your guests via the Club website. Do not register via Eventbrite. Public Support We appreciate your interest in the Grolier Club’s programming on the art and history of the book. For more than 130 years we have offered our exhibitions and lectures to the public, free of charge. If you have enjoyed these offerings, and would like to support that tradition, and help ensure that it continues, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Grolier Club. Accessibility An ADA-compliant lift from street level to the lobby is available to anyone with mobility issues. All desk staff should be ready and able to assist you in operating the lift, with or without advance notice. A “T-Coil” assisted listening system is available to anyone attending a lecture in the Exhibition Hall. Visitors with hearing aids should turn their devices to the “T” setting in order to access the system; visitors without hearing aids may request a “loop receiver” with earphones. Environment The temperature and humidity in the exhibition hall are tightly controlled for the sake of the valuable items on display, and this may cause the room to feel chilly, particularly in warmer weather, to those coming in from outside. United by their assertive, sometimes insistent, political messages, the fifty-two works by thirty-three artists included in this exhibition offer a select and lively perspective on American elections, politicians and social power dynamics. Spanning more than five decades, the works not only refer to political subjects and social issues specific to their time, but also resonate with ideological and humanistic themes amazingly relevant today. This exhibition invites the viewer to compare and contrast many visual strategies that explore issues of racism, demagoguery, oppression, war, climate change, among others. Some artists employ tools such as satire, propaganda, and the portrayal of newsworthy events or utopian ideals. Others utilize more iconic subjects—such as U.S. presidents, Uncle Sam, the Oval Office, and Old Glory—to celebrate, examine, and critique American governance and policy.

Restrooms and lockers (on a first come, first served basis) will be available. We will be plogging rain or shine, so please dress accordingly. Can't make it on November 1? We still encourage climate activists in all parts of the world to join us from afar by plogging in their own hometowns to spread awareness and help clean up our planet. Tag us @nycmarathon, @nyrr and #TCSNYCMarathon to show off your plogging efforts! About Ginger Zee: Ginger has had a love of running since middle school but never had a chance to race as she has been chasing storms around the world as a meteorologist. Her “why” has evolved greatly over the years and being a conduit of climate science, and environmental change has become a major part of her coverage. Ginger is focused on consuming less of everything, except movement. Running has been a huge part of her mental health journey so a plogging jaunt to pick-up litter is the perfect way to mesh all of Ginger’s favorite subjects. About Tina Muir: As a mother of two and an elite marathoner, Tina aims to inspire change through running. She is the founder and CEO of Running for Real, a podcast that encourages runners to be brave and leave their comfort zones to address the climate emergency. She believes in running as a vehicle for social change. She is also the author of “Becoming a Sustainable Runner”, a practical guide for runners of all abilities and backgrounds who want to take meaningful action to protect our planet through their love of the sport.
