Javier Calleja: A Real Tree... | Almine Rech Gallery
Nov 8–Dec 14, 2024 (UTC-5)
New York
This is Kalega’s fourth solo exhibition at the gallery and the first time the artist’s new works have been shown in New York. The theme of smile, once quite rare in art, is now represented by Mona Lisa and her ambiguous closed-mouth smile. In Kalega’s new works, this smile exudes an atmosphere of joy, mystery or mischief, which runs through the history of art in painting.
Jeff Wall Exhibition | New York
Nov 8–Dec 21, 2024 (UTC-5)
New York
Gagosian is pleased to present an exhibition of works by Jeff Wall at the 541 West 24th Street gallery in New York. Included are five new pictures and several not previously seen in the United States. Wall connects photography with elements of painting, cinema, and literature in pictures that range from classic reportage to elaborate constructions. Some images emphasize what the artist calls “blatant artifice,” while others are made simply, spontaneously, and directly. Wall favors no particular approach and has explored the breadth and complexity of photography for several decades. A number of works in the exhibition are what Wall calls “near documentary” images, which may resemble snapshots but are made in collaboration with people who appear in them. This group includes two full-length portraits, Young man wet with rain (2011) and Portrait in Noto, which was photographed in 2007 during a visit to Sicily, but printed only this year. Fallen rider, made in summer 2022, derives from an event witnessed by a friend thirty years ago; Wall recovered the memory of this account and reconstructed it near the place where it apparently occurred.
Brooke Hsu: Oklahoma Nature Theater | New York
Nov 8–Dec 20, 2024 (UTC-5)
New York
Taiwanese-American artist Brooke Hsu is known for weaving fantasy, myth and autobiography across a range of media. The 14 works on display reflect a period of transition for her, as she nostalgically revisits past motifs while experimenting with finding joy in new ones.
Katharina GrossePie Sell, Lee Slip, Eel Lips | New York
Nov 12–Dec 21, 2024 (UTC-5)
New York
Gagosian is pleased to announce Pie Sell, Lee Slip, Eel Lips, an exhibition of new paintings by Katharina Grosse at its gallery at Park & 75, New York. This exhibition follows Katharina Grosse: Studio Paintings, 1988–2022: Returns, Revisions, Inventions, a retrospective that originated at the Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum in Saint Louis and traveled to the Kunstmuseum Bern and Kunstmuseum Bonn through September 2024.Grosse uses a compressor-driven spray gun to apply industrial paints directly onto landscapes, architecture, objects, and panels. This tool extends her reach and accelerates her gestures, balancing impulsiveness with intent. In her studio outside Berlin, she produces works on canvas in a practice that is consistent with the spontaneous flow of her improvisational, performative process. Painting in the studio also permits her to develop works over a longer period than the institutional and organizational constraints of her in-situ projects generally allow. In her studio paintings as much as in her environmental works, Grosse uses paint to claim territory at immersive scales, introducing new conceptions of color and space that disorient and reorient the viewer. To make them, she sprays paint onto unstretched canvases in a varied palette of vibrant primary and secondary hues, making use of chromatic and spatial juxtaposition. The propulsive, rhythmic marks traverse the paintings as tapering lines and whiplash curves that spiral back on themselves, capturing the trajectories of the artist’s full-body movements.
Noah Davis: Ancient Reign | David Zwirner
Nov 13, 2024–Jan 25, 2025 (UTC-5)
New York
David Zwirner is pleased to present a selection of works on paper by American artist Noah Davis at the gallery’s East 69th Street location in New York, the first exhibition to focus on this significant and generative area of the artist’s practice. Curated by Davis’s widow, the artist Karon Davis, this intimate grouping of works provides insight into the wide-ranging interests, influences, and ideas that equally informed his paintings and curatorial activities.
Adolph Gottlieb Vital Images | Pace Gallery
Nov 15–Dec 21, 2024 (UTC-5)
New York
Pace is pleased to present Vital Images, an exhibition of late paintings, works on paper, and sculpture by Adolph Gottlieb, at its 540 West 25th Street gallery in New York. Running from November 14 to December 21, this show will spotlight paintings created by the artist in the final years of his life. Holistically, the exhibition will reveal the intense ambition and formal refinement that motivated Gottlieb’s practice in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Beginning his career as an artist in New York in the 1920s, Gottlieb would become one of the founding members of The Ten, a group of artists devoted to expressionist and abstract painting, in 1935. Eight years later, he helped establish another group of abstract painters, The New York Artist Painters, which included Mark Rothko, John Graham, and George L. K. Morris. In 1943, Gottlieb co-authored and published a letter with Rothko in The New York Times, expressing what is now considered the first formal statement of the concerns of Abstract Expressionism.
Irving Penn: Kinship Curated by Hank Willis Thomas | Pace Gallery
Nov 15–Dec 21, 2024 (UTC-5)
New York
Pace is pleased to present Irving Penn: Kinship, an exhibition of work by the famed photographer Irving Penn, curated by artist Hank Willis Thomas, at its 508 West 25th Street gallery in New York. On view from November 15 to December 21, this show will spotlight works produced by Penn throughout his 70-year career, including selections from his Worlds in a Small Room series, his iconic portraits of artists, actors, and writers, and other genres of his images. These photographs will be exhibited within an installation designed by Thomas to replicate a structure that Penn used to photograph many of his high-profile subjects.
Working for Vogue for nearly 70 years, Penn left an indelible mark on the history of photography. His inventive fashion photographs, which transformed American image-making in the postwar era, continued to appear in the magazine up until his death in 2009. The artist was also highly accomplished and experimental in the darkroom, having engineered, among other innovations, a complex technique for making platinum-palladium prints.
A trained photographer, Thomas, widely known for his galvanizing public works around the US, is deeply interested in both the making and consumption of images. His investigations into subjectivity and perception inform his work in photography and other mediums, including sculpture, screenprinting, video, and installation. Penn’s Worlds in a Small Room works—for which he journeyed to Cuzco, Crete, Extremadura, Dahomey, Cameroon, San Francisco, Nepal, New Guinea, and Morocco to capture people’s portraits within a tent he used as a portable studio—have been particularly influential for Thomas, who was part of the artistic team behind the traveling, participatory installation In Search of the Truth (The Truth Booth), which debuted in 2011 and has since been presented around the world.

Black Friday in New York 2024 | New York
Nov 29, 2024 (UTC-5)
New York
Black Friday in New York is the biggest discount shopping day of the year. Shoppers can usually expect discounts of up to 80% off on items at this time! It only happens once a year, at the end of November. In 2024, Black Friday will be on November 29.
Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving. For many people, this marks the "official" start of the holiday shopping season. Every Thanksgiving, the US retail industry does its best to lure shoppers into stores or online, hoping to make a killing by offering the best deals.
Look out for "flash sales," which are select items sold at extremely low prices when stores open or in the early hours of Black Friday. Flash sales are always worth waking up early for! Flash sales have the biggest markdowns on top brands and electronics. However, these sale items are available in limited quantities: so once they're sold out, they're gone. Plus, each person can usually only take advantage of one flash sale.
