Currently, projects include the new performing arts lab space for Bard College and the new design for the Museum of Chinese in America for downtown Manhattan. She is deeply committed to sustainable and site sensitive design methods in all her projects. Her work asks the viewer to reconsider nature and the environment at a time when it is crucial to do so. A committed environmentalist, she is at work on her final memorial, What is Missing?; a cross-platform, global memorial to the planet, calling attention to the crisis surrounding biodiversity and habitat loss. About the talk... One of the truly astounding things about postmodernism is that, whatever it became in the hands of less talented enthusiasts, it originated as more or less what many of its recent practitioners say it is not, that is, it began as a formal system or a series of formal systems. Formal systems are probably not well-known or understood outside of mathematics, computer and natural sciences, but they are pervasive across social sciences and humanities as well. This paper will examine the two sides of this question. On the one side, what takes place when a society only speaks with propositions that are determined to be either rationally or factually true, and on the other side, what happens when language is fully metaphorical? About the speaker... Dorothea Olkwoski is University of Colorado Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at CU Colorado Springs. She is the Director of Cognitive Studies, former Director of Humanities, former Chair of Philosophy, and former founding Director of Women's Studies. Olkowski is the author of more than one hundred articles and fourteen books, including her most recent publication, Deleuze, Bergson, and Merleau-Ponty, The Logic and Pragmatics of Affect, Perception, and Creation (Indiana University Press, 2021). Her research focuses on the interaction of gender, politics, and culture. She is dedicated to providing accessible education to students. Trent Tomengo is the President of the Board here at the Art & History Museums of Maitland. He is a Professor of Humanities at Seminole State College of Florida, and professionally exhibits his paintings in museums and galleries. He was an Artist-in-Action at the A&H from 2013-15. Tomengo earned a B.A. in Fine Art from Stetson University, and an M.F.A. in Painting and a Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from the University of South Florida. Upon graduating, he served in dual roles as the assistant curator and program coordinator at the Zora Neale Hurston National Museum of Fine Arts. It was, however, his teaching a semester at Stetson University and at Seminole Community College that prompted Tomengo to pursue a full-time teaching career.
