About the Book In the tradition of Nancy Drew, four kids and one grandfather in Miami tackle a decades-old mystery in this first book in the action-packed and funny Sherlock Society middle grade series from New York Times bestselling, Edgar Award–winning author James Ponti! Siblings Alex and Zoe Sherlock take their last name as inspiration when choosing a summer job. After all, starting a detective agency has to be better than babysitting (boring), lawn mowing (sweaty), or cleaning out the attic (boring and sweaty). Their friends Lina, an avid bookworm, and Yadi, an aspiring cinematographer, join the enterprise, and Alex and Zoe’s retired reporter grandfather offers up his sweet aquamarine Cadillac convertible and storage unit full of cold cases.
The group’s first target is the long-lost treasure supposedly hidden near their hometown Miami. Their investigation into the local doings of famed gangster Al Capone leads them to a remote island in the middle of the Everglades where they find alarming evidence hinting at corporate corruption.
Together with Grandpa’s know-how and the kids’ intelligence—plus some really slick gadgets—can the Sherlock Society root out the conspiracy? About the Author James Ponti is the New York Times bestselling author of four middle grade book series: The Sherlock Society following a group of young detectives; City Spies, about an unlikely squad of five kids from around the world who form an elite MI6 Spy Team; the Edgar Award–winning Framed! series, about a pair of tweens who solve mysteries in Washington, DC; and the Dead City trilogy, about a secret society that polices the undead living beneath Manhattan. His books have appeared on more than fifteen different state award lists, and he is the founder of a writers group known as the Renegades of Middle Grade. James is also an Emmy–nominated television writer and producer who has worked for many networks including Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, PBS, History, and Spike TV, as well as NBC Sports. He lives with his family in Orlando, Florida. Please be advised that by attending this event your photograph or image may be taken in connection with Bookmarks. To opt out, please see a staff member. The exhibition presents over a hundred works from Vaisvilaite’s latest series of drawings, created over the past six years. On view September 6–29, 2024 Opening reception: Friday, September 6, 4-9 PM Meet the Artist at the opening reception. SLA Art Space 307 W 30th Street, New York Composed on recycled paper, these hauntingly beautiful images span the years 2018 to 2024, forming a narrative that is both personal and biographical, as well as imaginary. The drawings, deeply influenced by various events from the artist’s life, explore themes of loneliness, alienation, terror, and vulnerability. In her work, Vaisvilaite portrays herself as both the artist and the subject; her face is often visible but frequently disguised, altered, or enveloped by symbolic objects, animals, and plants. About the artist Rasa Vaisvilaite was born in Vilnius, Lithuania, and studied art at the Vilnius Art Academy. Her work spans various media, including animation, video editing, graphic design, and street art. Currently residing in Bergen, Norway, Vaisvilaite captures life's fleeting moments through a personal landscape that blends human, natural, and built imagery. She prefers working with pen and pencils on recycled paper, old school notebooks, and cardboard boxes. As she explains, “Expensive paper scares me; I’m afraid of ruining it.” In 2021, she collaborated closely with poet and performer Faith Hylingaer on the book Love Letters, published in New York. About SLA Art Space SLA Art Space, a multi-purpose events venue, established in 2014 by the Lithuanian Alliance of America, a not-for-profit organization. Cambridge West unveils a new public artwork, ‘Third Nature’, for the new innovation district. Cambridge West unveils a new public artwork, ‘Third Nature’, for the new innovation district. Join the artist group Troika in a panel discussion chaired by Andrew Nairne, Director, Kettle’s Yard, University of Cambridge. Crossing the boundaries of art and science, and exploring experiences of nature and landscape interposed by visual and other technologies, this event includes a close look at ‘Third Nature’ which consists of 15 native and non-native mature trees, carefully selected with the help of Cambridge University Botanic Gardens, and planted in a grid pattern typically associated with representations of tree libraries in digital visualisation software. Speakers include Jordan Kaplan from Contemporary Art Society and Professor Matthew Gandy from the Department of Geography. Cambridge West is the home of world-class research and innovation. Purpose built by the University of Cambridge, Cambridge West is a collaborative place that attracts talent and innovation for societal impact. Third Nature is the new public artwork for a new innovation district and it supports our cultural placemaking and public engagement. The collaborative research process undertaken by the artists explores ideas at the intersection, replicating our science and innovation around Cambridge West. Troika is a Franco-German contemporary art group formed by Eva Rucki, Conny Freyer and Sebastien Noel in 2003 who live and work in London. Working across media in sculpture, film, installation, and painting, their work contemplates humanity’s experiences and attitudes towards new technologies and how these transform our understanding and relationships to nature, each other and the wider world. Their artworks broach themes that include artificial intelligence, algorithmic data, forms of life, virtual and physical representation systems. Contemporary Art Society have supported Troika and the University through the commission of Third Nature.
