Michele Feeney: Like Family | Changing Hands Bookstore
Sep 13, 2024 (UTC-7)ENDED
West
Valley author Michelle Feeney presents her debut historical novel, Like Family, which follows Mollie Crowley, a young unmarried Irish teacher, as she takes care of an eight-year-old Polish girl who was orphaned after her family died during the 1918 influenza epidemic. ABOUT THE BOOK Mollie Crowley, a 26-year-old Irish unmarried teacher at a one-room schoolhouse in rural Michigan, and 8-year-old Cecilia Pokorski, a Polish girl orphaned after the deaths of her family during the 1918 influenza pandemic, are an unlikely pair. While Cecilia is grieving the loss of her beloved Mamusia, Mollie leans on her own mother, Catherine, for assistance after taking the girl into their home. Mollie loves teaching, but Cecilia hated having Mollie as her first teacher. In their town in rural Michigan, the Irish and the Polish don't mix. The Catholic Church, the town's doctor, and Mollie's older brothers are pitted against Mollie, who is highly independent, even stubborn. Everyone who fears the sickness is desperate to stay safe and healthy, and unsure of what precautions work. Cecilia is treated with suspicion, even fear. Mollie, Cecilia, and Catherine, while isolated on their family farm, face all these struggles with courage and creativity. Readers will see challenges they faced during COVID-19 as similar to the ones people faced nearly a hundred years earlier. Like Family explores themes of prejudice related to ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and religion; foster care and adoption; feminism; education and teaching; language and cultural differences; family factions; death and grief; loneliness; and ultimately, the power of love, family (biological and intentional), and community. ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Michele Feeney, a lawyer in Phoenix, Arizona, is a native of Michigan. She pursued her passion for creative writing for 20 years before she earned an MFA from Bennington College in 2022. Having raised five children (biological and adopted) and welcomed two grandchildren, she made navigating the COVID-19 pandemic a family affair. While doing so, she remembered a story told to her by her grandmother and was inspired to imagine how families and community members navigated their way through the Spanish influenza epidemic of 1918. Like Family is her first novel.

രചന Rachana - The Evolution Festival | The Center at West Park - Sanctuary (Entrance on Amsterdam Avenue)
Sep 14–Sep 25, 2024 (UTC-5)ENDED
West
The Nadanam Collective proudly presents രചന 'Rachana,' a traditional Indian dance production celebrating the rich cultural heritage and vibrant rhythms of Kerala, India. Through the classical art form of Bharatanatyam, 'Rachana' honors the diverse musical compositions and ancestral traditions of our homeland, connecting past and present through graceful movement and expressive storytelling.
In this evocative production, Jeeno Joseph delves into Kerala’s traditional art forms, infusing Bharatanatyam with elements from Thiruvathira, Mohiniyattam, Margam Kali, and Kathakali.
Additionally, 'Rachana' draws inspiration from the iconic Kasavu and white textiles traditionally worn in Kerala. The use of these elegant fabrics not only enhances the visual aesthetic of the performance but also connects the dancers to the cultural and historical roots of Kerala. The Kasavu, with its distinctive gold-bordered white fabric, symbolizes purity and tradition, and its drape and movement on stage reflect the grace and continuity of Kerala’s artistic heritage.
'Rachana' transforms these diverse elements into a cohesive dance narrative, allowing the dancers’ bodies to become a bridge to their ancestors while offering a profound homage to the musical and artistic tapestry of their beloved homeland. Creative Team Jeeno Joseph - Choreographer and Dancer

BRIDGE PERCUSSION Live at Fulton Street Collective Night 2 | Fulton Street Collective
Sep 15, 2024 (UTC-6)ENDED
West
The evening will feature live painting from visual artist TBA. Bridge (noun): a time, place, or means of connection or transition.
What began with Alex Chao's interest in chamber music rapidly coalesced into a full-fledged production of Andy Akiho's Seven Pillars. A Northwestern University alum, Chao gathered fellow Chicago-based alumni to form this ensemble. Showcasing members of the percussion studio from different graduation years and diverse backgrounds, this group acts as a bridge between past and future cohorts of Northwestern percussionists.
Bridge (verb): make a difference between two groups smaller or less significant.
The production of Seven Pillars is equal parts challenging and rewarding. This trailblazing suite for chamber percussion requires command over the individual's part and subsequent surrender to composite grooves. Through rigorous rehearsal, the ensemble has developed unique coordination skills, mastered complex rhythms, and discovered compelling sounds in the process. Whether currently immersed in the art of percussion or now appreciating it from the periphery, each ensemble member is determined to bridge the gap between casual commitment and professional musicianship. Lineup:Ensemble:
