Beware the Jabberwock! | SJI International, Toa Payoh West Gate

Nov 19, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore

Theater
Beware the Jabberwock! is playing at St Joseph's Institution International HS Assembly Hall on Tuesday the 19th of November, 2024. The SJII cast and crew includes 20+ students led by Dr Webster, Mr Taylor and Ms Barlow. Emma and Lucy are lost in Tulgey Wood, a mysterious forest full of weird and wonderful creatures. Trying to find their way home, they encounter boisterous Toves and anxious Raths, receive a warning from the refined and snobbish Borogroves about the deadly Jubjub Bird, and are stalked by the frumious Bandersnatch. Joined by intrepid but hapless knight Percy, they come face to face with the awesome Jabberwock – and then Lucy is bandersnatched! Eventually the Jabberwock’s terrible secret is revealed, and the children find out what “frumious” really means. Suggested by the poem “Jabberwocky”, the play is set in the fantasy world of Lewis Carroll's Alice stories. Shortlisted in Scottish and Welsh playwriting competitions, one judge commented, “it has the same delightfully confusing dialogue of Carroll’s work and brings back fond memories of reading these stories as a child. Wonderfully cryptic nonsensical moments as well as moments of philosophical clarity made me smile and wonder. This play will go down a treat with children and adults alike.” The show will take place at the SJI International High School Assembly Hall, for more information on how to get to the venue: https://www.sji-international.com.sg/admissions/getting-to-sjii Tickets are $10 per person, with free seating on a first-come-first-serve basis. The show starts at 17:00 (doors open at 16:30). All attendees MUST show a valid ticket to security or the operations team at the Toa Payoh West entrance to SJI International to be allowed entry. Arts
Botanical Paradigms presents a series of imaginary plants that Chen developed during her three-month residency at INSTINC. The exhibition takes its title from the concept of a ‘paradigm’—a distinctive set of ideas or thought patterns that serve as a lens for observing and understanding the world. Through the paradigm of fictional botany, Chen seeks to challenge and reconsider conventional perceptions of nature and reality, conducting a dialogue that bridges the natural and the synthetic, the traditional and the technological. Following the transformation of these imagined plant species across multiple media, from traditional techniques such as drawing, and embroidery to digital technologies like 3D animation and videography. The interplay between craftsmanship and contemporary digital practices serves as a metaphor for the evolving nature of thought, showing how our perspectives shift with technological advancements. This exhibition is part of Chen's ongoing transmedia storytelling project, FACTORY, which explores a transmedia storyworld centered on a fictional biological laboratory called ‘FACTORY’. In this evolving storyworld, FACTORY functions as both a research center and an archive for Chen's creative experiments, offering a space where scientific inquiry and artistic expression converge. About Artist Chen Dongyan is a multidisciplinary artist based in Singapore. Her practice is primarily based on video and installations, but also consists of various media such as drawing, writing, sculptures, and photography. Get Up Close and Personal with Singapore's #1 DRAG QUEEN OF COMEDY, KUMAR. About this event KUMAR: Singapore's #1 DRAG QUEEN OF COMEDY Kumar is undoubtedly one of the country's leading comic and drag queen who's been making a name for himself since the early nineties. Believe it or not, he's spent 20 years in the entertainment industry - conquering television, film and the stage - and is primarily known for keeping locals humoured at the now defunct Boom Boom Room. After several years of cracking relentless jokes, performing lip-synching sets, doing traditional Indian dance, and getting jiggy with hunky go-go boys, we still haven't had enough of Kumar. Besides this local legend's entertainment talents, he is also admired for his bravery to speak up for queer issues and those pertaining to controversial local politics. Not forgetting his love for poking fun at all things taboo in Singapore, Kumar never fails to humour us with his quirky racial and sexual observations... And the best part is, he always manages to get away with his comments from local authorities. You might disagree with us, but we believe that Kumar will always be a prominent voice for all Singaporeans regardless of race, gender and sexual orientation. Time Doors open at 7:00pm. Please be seated by 8:00pm. First Half: 8:05pm sharp Intermission: 15 minutes Second Half: 9:00pm (approximate) --- Tips If you're planning to attend the show in a group, purchase all your tickets in one single transaction to be seated together. If you arrive and see a looOOoong queue, don't fret, you'll be at the exact same place no matter which part of the queue you're in. The show starts at 8.05pm sharp, doors open at 7pm. If you arrive after 8.05pm, GOOD LUCK! If you are unable to reserve a table for dining, we encourage you to take your dinner before arriving as Kumar's show may end later than expected. Important Notes: All seating arrangements will be pre-assigned, no preferential seating arrangements (Some seats may have tables close by while others may not). All indoor seats are arranged in a theatre setting without tables or stands, and no food or drinks will be served during the show.
