Art historian Theresa Tan talks about the ways of seeing abstract art for the series “Estetika Timur – Rentas Sempadan” (Eastern Aesthetics – Cross Border). Tan will guide you through his journey, explaining how “Estetika Timur” has evolved from previous works and where he envisions it heading in future series. Awang Damit Ahmad (1956) is one of Malaysia’s foremost contemporary artists. His work is deeply rooted in his personal experiences, cultural background, and the broader Malaysian socio-political landscape. His journey as an artist began with a formal education in the arts at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) in the late 1970s. His transition into the art world was marked by the intersection of traditional Malaysian culture with modernist concerns, a thematic focus that would later culminate in his renowned Essence of Culture (EOC) series and later to his Estetika Timur series. Estetika Timur - Rentas Sempadan” (Eastern Aesthetics - Cross Border) - Awang Damit Ahmad is presented by ART SEASONS and Henry Butcher Art Auctioneers (HBAA). Estetika Timur – Rentas Sempadan (Eastern Aesthetics - Cross Border) series emphasises Eastern aesthetics, but not merely in a superficial or ornamental sense. It reflects an engagement with the cultural and philosophical traditions of the East, particularly in the context of Malaysia’s diverse and pluralistic society. The artworks are rooted in a reflective self-referential experience, representing a journey that captures the essence of a farmer's humble livelihood. Through the principles of simplicity, harmony, and balance, these works balance figuration and abstraction, exhibiting a dynamic range between the intimate and expressionistic, as well as the intellectual and intuitive. The artworks explore fundamental human values, alongside broader societal, cultural, and environmental concerns, informed by rigorous research, personal experiences, and memory. Collectively, they form an ongoing artistic exploration, continually seeking deeper meaning and value in life. Information Source: Art Seasons Gallery | eventbrite

To request a customised workshop itinerary and quote, please contact us directly at contact@improv.sg. What's 'improv'?'Improv' is short for 'improvisational theatre and comedy'. As the name implies, improv is a special form of theatre wherein no scripts are involved! Rather, the performers have to create their stories on the fly, usually with the help of their audience. This creates a unique experience where no two shows are the same, and where both performers and audiences actively collaborate as part of the storytelling. About The Improv CompanyFounded in 2013, The Improv Company is Singapore’s first and biggest school of improvisational theatre and comedy. We welcome dozens of new students every month, imparting the positive values of “Yes, And” to every new cohort. Over the years, we’ve also produced and performed in hundreds of improv shows. Our coaches have supported a handful of performing groups; some have gone on to grow as independent troupes, while others stayed as TIC’s House Teams. Internationally, we’ve represented Singapore at numerous festivals around the world. We also hosted the first Singapore Improv Festival in 2016, which now occurs biennially. Ultimately, we hope to keep advancing improv as an applicable approach to daily life as well as a staple form of community theatre in Singapore! Information Source: The Improv Company | eventbrite

Dancing with the Inanimate | Imagination Room- Level 5

Nov 23, 2024 (UTC+8)ENDED
Singapore
Arts
How do we respond when an inanimate object becomes our duet partner? How do we listen to stillness, attend to the unpredictable, and choreograph the ordinary? This workshop invites participants to explore how we encounter, embody, and integrate the inanimate into our dancing. Using inanimate objects as movement collaborators, the workshop reimagines how we perceive dance, movement, and the body itself. In particular, the ping pong ball will serve as a focal point, inviting participants to explore movement through a playful yet challenging dialogue with this small but dynamic object. Through this collaboration, participants will step beyond traditional notions of dance, discovering how stillness, unpredictability, and spontaneity can become choreography. The workshop encourages participants, especially those without formal dance experience, to reframe their everyday movements and interactions. By doing so, they transform mundane actions into expressive dance sequences. Structured in three key stages—Authenticity, Clarity, and Duetting—participants will heighten their awareness of time, space, and the relationship between their bodies and the ping pong ball. Through observation, experimentation, and improvisation, they will cultivate a unique partnership with the ball, allowing it to influence and inspire new choreographic possibilities. Please note: - Participants need to register with a valid mylibrary ID account or else your registration will be invalid. - Due to limited slots, please come on time as your slot will be given to walk-in participants if any. This programme is suitable for: - Participants age 17 years and above - Participants who are considered physically fit to do a movement class. Attire Notes: 1) Bare feet, no shoes required. 2) Fitting & stretchable attire (T-shirt & pants) which allow you to move freely, even level changes. 3) NO jeans, skirt and dress, but socks are allowed if you really need. 4) Bring along your own bottled water. 5) A towel for yourself, as you may sweat during training. About The Performer's Body Series Central Arts Library’s “The Performer’s Body” is designed for participants with little to no performing experience, providing them with essential skills, and understanding of their body’s potential. This workshop series focuses on fundamental techniques, gradually building participants performing vocabulary. By exploring the basics of physicality and expression, “The Performer’s Body” equips participants with a foundation to begin their artistic journey. About Dapheny Chen Dapheny Chen is an independent dance artist navigating the roles of choreographer, performer, and educator. Her practice prioritises the dancing body, revisiting archived movement within the living body to re-frame, re-inform, and re-educate the way dance and choreography are made, viewed, and engaged with. She explores labour practices, questioning the value, sustainability, and economics of artistic work. By examining how dance is produced and consumed, she advocates for equitable practices in the field. Collaborating with inanimate objects, technology, and alternative documentation processes, she seeks to develop actionable research through performance and academia, fostering global dialogues on dance labour and value.
