4 niche cities accessible by high-speed rail | 3-day 2-night relaxing getaway — traveler post in Taining

4 niche cities accessible by high-speed rail | 3-day 2-night relaxing getaway

After working overtime, I just wanted to find a place that isn't crowded and doesn't require waking up early to travel. I've picked 4 cities with completely different styles, all accessible by high-speed rail, perfect for a short getaway to sleep in and explore at a leisurely pace. 🌿 Zhejiang · Songyang | The last hidden gem of Jiangnan 🚄 Transportation: About 1.5 hours by high-speed rail from Hangzhou East to Songyang Station. Take a taxi to the county town after exiting the station. 🍃 Overall feel: Avoid Wuzhen and Xitang. Yellow mud ancient villages and Songyin Creek offer a very rustic atmosphere, perfect for getting some fresh air and relaxing. 🗓️ 3-day 2-night slow itinerary Day 1 | Arrive and check in. Stroll through the Ming and Qing Ancient Street in the afternoon, see the old artisan shops, and take a walk along Songyin Creek in the evening to wait for the sunset. Day 2 | Yangjiatang Ancient Village. See the yellow earth houses and find a corner to sunbathe. No need to force yourself to visit all the villages; just go back to the homestay to rest if you're tired. Day 3 | Sit at Chenjiapu Avant-Garde Bookstore, take a light stroll through the village, buy local specialties, and head back. 🍜 Food: Salt-baked chicken, huizhi cake, sweet potato starch dumplings. 🏨 Accommodation tips: Prioritize the county town or Yangjiatang homestays. The ancient villages are quiet and remote at night; if you're worried about convenience, choose the county town. 💡 Quick tip: There is distance between the ancient villages; you can charter a car or take a taxi, don't try to walk. 🪨 Fujian · Taining | A city of water and Danxia landforms 🚄 Transportation: About 1.5 hours by high-speed rail from Fuzhou to Taining Station. Take a 10-minute taxi ride to the ancient city. 🍃 Overall feel: A quiet ancient city in northern Fujian, with clear water and Danxia landforms. Taking a boat to see the mountains is very healing, and there are no crowded tour groups. 🗓️ 3-day 2-night slow itinerary Day 1 | Arrive and take your time strolling through Taining Ancient City + Shangshu Lane. The old alleys are very quiet. Rest in the evening. Day 2 | Take a boat tour of Dajin Lake and see Ganlu Temple. If you don't want to rush, just visit this one spot and spend the rest of the time resting. Day 3 | Take a gentle walk in Zhaixia Grand Canyon to see the streams and rock walls, or just eat snacks in the ancient city. Head back when you have time. 🍜 Food: Youjiang tofu, nuangu buns, Jinhu clear water fish. 🏨 Accommodation tips: Homestays inside the ancient city; you're right in the alleys, making it convenient to eat. 💡 Quick tip: You must take a boat at Dajin Lake. Boat schedules are fixed, so no need to wake up early to grab the first one. 🏮 Anhui · Jixi | The origin of Huizhou culture 🚄 Transportation: High-speed rail from Hangzhou/Shanghai directly to Jixi North Station. 🍃 Overall feel: Avoid the crowds of Hongcun and Xidi. White walls and black tiles along the Dengyuan River, delicious Huizhou cuisine, and friendly prices. 🗓️ 3-day 2-night slow itinerary Day 1 | Check into a homestay near Longchuan, take a walk along the Dengyuan River in the evening, and see the riverside villages. Day 2 | Longchuan Hu Ancestral Hall, then go to Renli Ancient Village and spend the afternoon drinking tea at an old teahouse. Day 3 | Light hike on the gentle section of the Huihang Ancient Trail. Only walk the entrance section, no need to challenge yourself with high intensity. Head back afterward. 🍜 Food: Hu Shi Yipin Pot, Jixi stir-fried vermicelli, taguo. 🏨 Accommodation tips: Homestays in Longchuan Village offer great value; if you want more excitement, stay in Jixi County. 💡 Quick tip: Assess your ability for the Huihang Ancient Trail. If you don't want to walk, just skip it; no need to force yourself to check it off. 🍲 Jiangxi · Qianshan | A city of local life in Hekou Ancient Town 🚄 Transportation: Only 22 minutes by high-speed rail from Shangrao to Qianshan Station. 🍃 Overall feel: Close to Gexian Village, but much quieter. Local people still live in the Ming and Qing old streets of Hekou Ancient Town, and it's not very commercialized. 🗓️ 3-day 2-night slow itinerary Day 1 | Arrive, stroll through Hekou Ancient Town, take your time visiting the old merchant houses and paper mills, and watch the evening breeze on the Xin River. Day 2 | You can go to Gexian Mountain (optional! If you don't want to climb the mountain, stay in the ancient town to drink tea and eat snacks). Day 3 | Look for food at the ancient town's morning market, walk around, buy snacks like dengzhanguo, and head back. 🍜 Food: Dengzhanguo, Qianshan hot noodles, rice cakes. 🏨 Accommodation tips: Hotels around Hekou Ancient Town are convenient for travel and dining. 💡 Quick tip: Climbing Gexian Mountain is quite tiring. If your main goal is to relax, you can skip it. ✨ Final thoughts These four places correspond to: rustic ancient villages, Danxia landscapes, Huizhou-style villages, and the local life of an old town. You don't have to visit them all at once; pick the one that best matches your current mood. The core of a relaxing trip is: you don't have to visit all the attractions, stop when you're tired, and don't force yourself to complete a checklist.

99 bends and 88 shoals hidden deep in the mountains — traveler post in Taining

99 bends and 88 shoals hidden deep in the mountains

[Introduction] Shangqing Creek is located in the northeast of Taining County, Sanming, Fujian, upstream of Dajin Lake, and is part of the core area of the China Danxia World Natural Heritage site. Legend has it that the Western Han Taoist immortal Mei Fu once lived here in seclusion to practice alchemy, and the creek was named after the Taoist term "Shangqing." The entire creek is over 50 km long, and the open, essential canyon section is known for its 99 bends and 88 shoals. Over 400 years ago, Ming Dynasty scholar Chi Xianfang traveled here and wrote a travelogue praising the scenery as superior to the Nine-Bend Creek. There are no motorized boats here; the entire journey relies on boatmen manually poling bamboo rafts through the primitive canyon. With towering red cliffs and dense forests blocking the sun on both sides, it has very little commercialization. It focuses on a deep, quiet, and pristine landscape, making it the "slow rafting" experience in Taining you cannot miss. 🕘 [Opening Hours] Summer time (May–Oct): 7:30 AM–4:00 PM, last admission at 3:30 PM; Winter time (Nov–Apr): 8:30 AM–3:00 PM, last admission at 2:30 PM. ✅ Recommended duration: 2.5–3 hours, with the core bamboo rafting section taking about 2 hours. ⚠️ Important reminder: Water activities are heavily affected by water levels and heavy rain. During flood season, operations may be temporarily suspended due to rising water levels, so be sure to check the attraction's navigation notice before traveling. Try to enter the park between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM; the light in the mountains is soft, there are fewer crowds, and photos turn out better. In the afternoon, it is prone to fog, and the light is dimmer. 💴 [Ticket Prices] Combined ticket (bamboo raft + attraction shuttle bus) is about CNY 125 when booked online and CNY 130 at the ticket window. The shuttle bus is a mandatory purchase and cannot be waived. 👉 Concession policy: Children under 1 meter are free; children 1–1.4 meters and seniors aged 60+ can enjoy discounted tickets with valid ID; students and retired military personnel also have exclusive discounts with valid ID. There are no temporary price adjustments recently. It is recommended to book online 3 hours in advance to reduce queuing on-site. ⛺ [Activities] The core activity is the pristine bamboo raft canyon rafting. Each raft holds 6 people, and it only departs when full. If there are fewer people, you can wait to share a raft, or pay the difference for empty seats if you don't want to wait. ✅ Route: Ticket check at Changxing Tourist Center > Take the attraction shuttle bus to the upper pier > Board the bamboo raft to start rafting > Arrive at the lower pier > Take the shuttle bus back to the tourist center. Highlights along the way: Xianyu Gorge, Wulong Gorge, Carp Jumping Over the Dragon Gate, Five Elders Watching the Immortal, Luoxia Wall, and other unique rock landscapes. The narrowest part of the canyon barely allows the raft to pass, creating a strong sense of being enclosed by the rock walls. The boatman will explain the legends of the mountains and rocks along the way and may sing local Taining folk songs if in the mood. Tips for the boatman are voluntary and not required. 💡 Tips: The rafting current is generally gentle and is not a thrilling whitewater activity, so it is suitable for seniors and children. In shallow areas, water may splash onto the raft, and pant legs and shoes may get wet. The bamboo rafts do not have sunshades, and UV rays in the canyon are still strong. The raft seats are relatively hard and may be uncomfortable for long periods. 🚌 [Transportation] 1. Self-driving (recommended): Set your navigation to "Shangqing Creek Changxing Tourist Center"; do not search for the rafting pier directly. The Puwu Expressway has a Shangqing Creek toll station, making it very convenient to arrive from Fuzhou or Xiamen. The attraction's outdoor parking lot is free and has ample spaces. 2. Public transport: Arrive at Taining Station by high-speed train. You can take a taxi directly to Changxing Tourist Center from the station, which takes about 30 minutes. There are special shuttle buses from the Taining County Tourist Distribution Center, but the schedule is limited. You can also choose to charter a car in the county, which is suitable for groups and offers more flexibility.

With blue stone alleys, red lantern corridors, and exquisite ancient wood carvings, the blue hour at dawn and dusk offers gentle light and shadow, perfect for Hanfu and "New Chinese" style outfits, making it easy to capture quiet, ancient-style photos. Niche limited secret photography spots Guxi Star River is a summer-exclusive light and shadow secret. After sunset, use long exposure to capture the trails of fireflies in the forest. It is gentle, healing, and a unique material for niche travel photography. The hydrangea sea at the volcanic crater is a spot with wild, natural charm. With patches of blue and purple hydrangeas growing wildly by the volcanic lake, shooting from a low angle to fill the frame with flowers is perfect for light-colored outfits, creating a fresh and high-end look. High-end styling and gear pairing For Danxia landscape scenes, white, light apricot, and misty blue solid-colored dresses are best, as they are simple and clean without distracting from the scenery. For ancient villages and temples, prioritize "New Chinese" style, elegant Hanfu, and cotton-linen retro outfits to match the ancient atmosphere. Bring non-slip shoes for forest photography, and carry a light jacket as there is a large temperature difference between morning and evening in the mountains. In terms of gear, a wide-angle lens is best for capturing panoramic Danxia landscapes and the grand lines of ancient architecture; a mid-range lens is best for focusing on portraits and filtering out cluttered forest backgrounds; and a telephoto lens is best for capturing details of the cloud sea and lake surface. A lightweight tripod is needed for night bamboo raft and firefly photography to improve image texture with long exposure. The light in the mountains is soft, so there is no need for excessive color grading; the original footage already has a high-end filter effect. High-end travel photography tips to avoid pitfalls 1. Most mountain scenic areas have trails and mountain roads. Some sections are slippery, so focus on your footing while shooting and do not climb over safety barriers or get too close to cliff edges. 2. Most ancient village dwellings are private residences. Please do not enter without permission and respect the local residents' lives and private property. 3. Temperatures inside caves and canyons are lower and the light is dimmer. Prepare a jacket in advance and adjust your shooting parameters to avoid blurry images. 4. Mountain weather is changeable, and it is prone to fog and rain in the afternoon. Prioritize morning for outdoor shooting, as the light is stable and the weather is suitable. 5. Popular niche photography spots will have increased foot traffic during holidays. It is recommended to shoot early in the morning to avoid the crowds and get clean, empty shots. 6. Follow scenic area safety regulations during night tours and bamboo rafting. Do not stand up or reach out of the boat to ensure your safety while shooting. The high-end feel of travel photography in Sanming lies in the fact that the landscape is a poem and painting in itself, and the ancient charm is hidden in the daily life. There is no need for forced composition; the soft Danxia light at dawn and dusk, the texture of time in the ancient villages, and the quiet breeze in the mountain forests make every shot a unique, high-end Fujian landscape masterpiece.

Golden Lake

Ganlu Temple and Yixiantian at Dajin Lake have nice scenery and don't require much physical exertion. There weren't many people during the National Day holiday, so there were no long queues, which is an advantage of less-visited attractions. However, we weren't allowed to take a boat back; we took a tour bus instead. And for safety reasons, no one was allowed to go up to the deck to see the lake view, which was a bit of a pity.

Jiulong Pool

The day trip to Jiulongtan was very enjoyable; the scenery was beautiful, and the highlight was the bamboo rafting. Rafting at Yixiantian (a narrow gorge) offers a rare view, and the boatman provided commentary along the way, making for a great experience. The hour-long rafting trip was very satisfying.

Zhaixia Grand Canyon

I think this place is great except for the slightly inconvenient transportation. Hikers will love it. There aren't too many steps, and the forest coverage is very high. There are also unique rock formations to see. It's a very enjoyable experience!

Shangqing Stream

Overall, it was pretty good! Regarding tipping, the guide will proactively ask if you need 10 yuan per person. There were indeed many interesting sights that we wouldn't have discovered if he hadn't mentioned them, like the eagle's nest, rare trees, and historical sites. He also sings folk songs. Hiring a guide yourself would also incur a fee, but I think it was definitely worth it.

Taining Ancient City is well worth a visit. The Shangshu Di building complex is the best-preserved Ming Dynasty residential building complex in Jiangnan. It was the residence of Li Chunye, the Minister of War, Junior Guardian and Prince's Grand Tutor during the Tianqi period of the Ming Dynasty. It was listed as a national key cultural relic protection unit in 1988. Now there is also a "Ming Dynasty Wax Museum" in the "Shangshu Di".
