I hiked 50 kilometers in the US, and my first time was this hardcore!! — traveler post in Denver

I hiked 50 kilometers in the US, and my first time was this hardcore!!

This summer, I joined 300 hiking enthusiasts from home and abroad to take part in the Fjallraven Classic global hiking event / 2026 US station heavy pack hike. It was my first hike, and I wasn’t sure what to bring. Luckily, I didn’t overpack. My luggage weighed 17 kg, which didn’t feel heavy at first, but later I realized that’s the full weight of my 28-inch suitcase. The hike lasted three days, plus the first day to reach the campsite, totaling four days. During these four days, there was no internet or charging available. We had to carry all our gear on our backs, including a tent, sleeping bag, inflatable pad, three days’ worth of food, water, basic toiletries, down jacket, short-sleeve shirts, pants, and five or six other clothing items. All the clothing and the tent were from Fjallraven. During the day, we wore short sleeves under the sun; at night, we put on down jackets to stay warm; and when it rained, we wore rain jackets and rain pants for protection. My pants were the “Li Xian style” Keb outdoor master pants, made with G-1000® fabric and a 3D cut. They are windproof and waterproof but more breathable than other rain pants. They’re suitable for hiking outdoors and also for everyday city wear. After three days of hiking, I never felt stuffy. One pair of pants worked for all occasions. We climbed from an altitude of 2,800 meters to the highest point at 3,600 meters, then hiked back down. Along the way, we passed lakes, crossed mountains, waded through streams, walked on challenging rocky paths, and crossed meadows and dirt pits. We experienced heavy rain and lightning as well as strong sun. We saw many animals like moose, rabbits, squirrels, and wild chickens. At night, we sealed our food and scented items in bear canisters to prevent bears from coming near our tents. At the campsite, we boiled water and prepared our own meals. We set up our own tents and lived without showers or hair washing—just brushing our teeth and wiping our faces with lake water. We had to carry all our trash with us until we reached the final campsite to dispose of it. This was a journey that cleansed both mind and body and taught me how to coexist with nature and put environmental protection into practice. When away from the noise of society, people tend to lower their desires. Simple food brings happiness, and simple things bring great joy—just like Fjallraven. By embracing long-term thinking, following our own pace, and walking with nature, we don’t need to compete for first place. We just need to walk at our own pace, enjoy the joy of hiking, appreciate the natural scenery, face the wind and rain, and feel the sunshine. This is what hiking means to me.

This giant blue bear in downtown Denver is truly memorable — traveler post in Denver

This giant blue bear in downtown Denver is truly memorable

When I first saw it, I thought it was just a cute city installation, but later I discovered there's actually a pretty interesting story behind it. 📍I See What You Mean | Big Blue Bear This blue bear is about 40 feet (12 meters) tall. It was installed outside the Colorado Convention Center in 2005 and is a classic piece of public art in Denver. The most interesting part is—why is it "peeking" through the glass window? 👀 The artist, Lawrence Argent, was inspired after seeing a photo of a black bear peeking into a window. And the location where it stands happens to be the Convention Center, a place where many people gather, interact, and share ideas every day. So the artist had this giant bear stand outside the building, like a curious passerby who can't help but want to see what's happening inside. As for why it's blue? Actually, it wasn't originally intended to be a blue bear 😂 The blue material used during the design model phase was unexpectedly popular, and in the end, it became its most iconic color. So now when you see it, it really feels like a signature of Denver: 🏔️ It has Colorado's natural elements 🏙️ It has modern urban architecture 🎨 And a bit of that very Denver-style humor Plus, its official name, "I See What You Mean," is also quite interesting—a bear standing there "seeing," while this is a place for exchanging ideas. 📍Address: 700 14th St, Denver, CO 80202 It's right outside the Colorado Convention Center, in downtown Denver. 📸 Photo tips: Stand across the street to capture the whole bear + the glass building; or go inside the Convention Center to take a shot from the perspective of it "peeking inside"! If you're doing a city walk in downtown Denver, this is a great spot to check out~🐻

Denver 16th Street Mall shuttle squeeze in Colorado — traveler post in Denver

Denver 16th Street Mall shuttle squeeze in Colorado

#overratedspots I rode the free shuttle along the 16th Street Mall in Denver and found the experience more crowded and awkward than I expected. The shuttle is free and runs frequently, which is convenient, but the buses were packed with tourists, commuters, and people with luggage, and there was often no room to sit. The ride itself is only about a mile long, but the frequent stops and the crowded conditions made it feel longer. I boarded the shuttle near Union Station, which is the main hub, and rode it to the end of the mall. The service is free, and I did not need a ticket or payment, which was a plus. I made the mistake of riding during the late afternoon, when the buses were at their busiest. Finding a seat was impossible, and I ended up standing for the entire ride, which was uncomfortable given the bumps and sudden stops. One thing I did not expect was how much the shuttle felt like a tourist conveyor belt. The stops are frequent, and the announcements are repetitive, which made the ride feel more like a chore than a scenic trip. I also learned that the mall is undergoing construction in some areas, which made walking parts of it confusing. My suggestion is to walk the mall instead of taking the shuttle, as it is only about a mile long and the street is pedestrian-friendly. If you do ride, avoid peak hours and be prepared to stand. For me, the shuttle was more of a squeeze than a convenience.

Sunrise over the Continental Divide from Loveland Pass in Colorado — traveler post in Denver

Sunrise over the Continental Divide from Loveland Pass in Colorado

#fallcolors I arrived at Loveland Pass before dawn, parked near the summit, and stepped out into air so cold it took my breath away. At over 11,900 feet, the pass was already dusted with snow, and the sky to the east was beginning to glow a soft, bruised purple. As the sun rose, it lit up the rugged peaks of the Continental Divide in shades of gold and copper, and I stood there wishing I had dressed more warmly. Loveland Pass is free to access and open year-round, though winter conditions can make the road treacherous or closed without warning. I checked the forecast and road status the night before and was relieved to find the pass clear. The drive from Denver took about two hours, and I filled up with gas in Idaho Springs, since services are limited at higher elevations. There is no formal trail at the summit, but a short walk from the parking area offers wide views in both directions. The ground was icy in places, so I was glad I had worn sturdy boots with good traction. I also learned the hard way that my phone battery drops quickly in the cold, so I kept it in an inside pocket between shots. My question for fellow travelers is whether the Divide is more impressive at sunrise or sunset. I chose the morning for the clear light and quiet, but I imagine the evening colors must be spectacular as well.

Autumn walk through the Denver Botanic Gardens in Colorado — traveler post in Denver

Autumn walk through the Denver Botanic Gardens in Colorado

#fallcolors I spent a slow afternoon at the Denver Botanic Gardens in mid-October and was impressed by how much the property had to offer beyond its famous flower beds. I arrived in the early afternoon, paid the $15 admission at the entrance, and started with the Japanese Garden, where the maples were just beginning to turn. The sound of water features and the stillness of the ponds created a calm, meditative atmosphere that made it easy to slow down. From there, I followed a winding path through the prairie restoration area, where golden grasses and late-blooming asters added a different kind of autumn color. The Gardens also feature a large conservatory, which I explored when the temperature outside started to drop. A few tips from my visit: parking is free, and the garden is open daily, but some areas close earlier in the season, so I checked the schedule online before arriving. Wear comfortable shoes because the property covers 24 acres and involves a fair amount of walking. I also underestimated how much time I would spend in the conservatory and had to rush through the outdoor gardens at the end. My suggestion is to arrive early in the day and prioritize the outdoor areas first, saving the indoor spaces for later. I would also recommend bringing a light jacket, as the shade from the trees keeps some areas noticeably cooler than the surrounding city.

🇺🇸 Colorado | A gentle mountain breeze stirs the willows, turning them golden. — traveler post in Denver

🇺🇸 Colorado | A gentle mountain breeze stirs the willows, turning them golden.

Quaking aspen, scientifically known as *Populus tremuloides*, is a common deciduous tree in North America. White trunk: The light-colored bark contrasts sharply with the golden-yellow leaves. Golden crown: As chlorophyll decomposes in autumn, the leaves turn bright yellow, golden, and amber. Leaves in the breeze: The flattened petioles cause the leaves to tremble in the wind, hence the name "quaking aspen." Growing in patches: Many quaking aspen forests expand through clonal root systems, and large groves may belong to the same genetic individual, appearing from a distance like a golden sea of trees. 📅 When is the best time to go? The fall colors of quaking aspen in Colorado typically peak from mid-September to early October, but altitude, weather, and temperature variations can all affect the timing. In 2026, fall colors in some high-altitude areas are expected to arrive earlier than usual. 🗺️Route: ⛰️Cottonwood Pass The highlight here is the drive from the valley up the mountain pass, offering views of vast golden aspen forests, rolling hills, and the magnificent Collegiate Peaks. The pass is approximately 12,126 feet (3,696 meters) above sea level, and the autumn colors along the roadside are incredibly varied. Eastern starting point: Buena Vista. Western direction: Through Taylor Park area, leading to Almont and Crested Butte. ⛰️Maroon Bells Chestnut-colored twin peaks, lake reflections, and golden aspen create a classic scene. For capturing the rich layers of autumn scenery, this is more iconic than just a plain forest. ⛰️Kebler Pass One of Colorado's famous fall foliage routes, the slopes are densely covered with aspen, making the entire mountain appear as if it's covered in gold in autumn. Ideal for driving, photography, and experiencing the spectacular scale of the forest. ⛰️Dallas Divide From the pass, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Sneffels Mountains. The golden aspen forests at the foot of the mountains contrast sharply with the towering peaks, making it ideal for those who appreciate expansive mountain scenery. ⛰️Kenosha Pass Along the way, you'll see vast expanses of golden aspen trees, perfect for hiking through the forest, photographing the details of tree trunks and leaves, and also suitable for a fall foliage drive from the Denver direction.

🇺🇸 Colorado | Golden Autumn Breeze — traveler post in Denver

🇺🇸 Colorado | Golden Autumn Breeze

Maroon Bells, one of Colorado's most iconic natural landscapes, is located in the Elk Mountains of the Rocky Mountains, near the famous ski resort town of Aspen. The most unforgettable feature here is the two peaks: their dark reddish-brown rock faces take on a chestnut hue in the sunlight, creating a stunning contrast with the lake at their base, the dense aspen forests, and the distant snow-capped peaks. On calm days, the twin peaks are reflected in the lake, forming one of Colorado's most classic postcard-perfect scenes. 1. Maroon Lake: A Classic Viewpoint This is one of the best spots to photograph the twin peaks reflected in the water. Relatively easy trails run along the lake, suitable for visitors who want to enjoy the magnificent mountain views but don't want strenuous hiking. 2. Golden Aspen Forests in Autumn Popular Seasonal Feature Around late September to early October each year, the aspen leaves can turn a bright golden yellow, creating a striking contrast with the chestnut-colored peaks. The exact timing depends on the temperature and weather that year. 3. Mountain Hiking and Forest Scenery Suitable for all fitness levels You can simply stroll along the lake or choose a longer mountain trail. For a more relaxed experience, there's no need to challenge yourself with high-altitude, long-distance routes. 🚗 How to get to Maroon Bells? Nearest town: Aspen, approximately 30–45 minutes by car from the lake's entrance, actual time depends on traffic and booking arrangements. From Seattle: Usually fly to Denver first, then transfer or drive to the Aspen area; you can also drive from Denver, but the drive is longer. Regular Transportation: During peak season, it's usually necessary to book a shuttle bus or lakeside parking in advance. The shuttle bus departs from Aspen Highlands, approximately a 15-minute ride. ‼️Special Reminder: As of October 16, 2026, it is during the seasonal transition period. Official information indicates that the shuttle bus service will last on October 18th; parking reservations will still be required from October 19th to 31st, but entry will only be permitted through the reservation system. Reservations will no longer be required from November 1st until the roads are closed due to winter weather.

Lots of great exhibits and the animals look well cared for. I would love for more non zoo attractions and services. More food stands for instance.

Downtown Aquarium

I heard it was small at first, so I didn't have high expectations. But I really liked it when I went there. I saw a lot of small animals, such as seahorses, sea otters, clown fish (Nemo), jellyfish, and sharks. DOWNTOWN AQUARIUM is actually quite interesting. It's worth a visit. I didn't see the tiger, probably because he was lazy and went to sleep. I used a discount coupon and it was 10% cheaper.
