So much more than just an art museum, the National Museum of Mexican Art in the Pilsen neighborhood is a community space and a celebration of Chicago's Mexican heritage. The exhibits are expertly curated and bring attention to issues affecting the Mexican-American community and explore broader historical events and contemporary Latino culture. The annual Day of the Day exhibition is a must-see-- large ofrendas created by artists based in Chicago and Mexico pay tribute to the traditional Mexican holiday celebrating life and death, and the museum supplements the displays with workshops for museum visitors of all ages. There is a lovely gift shop with decorative artifacts, books, and Mexican treats. Be sure to walk around the outside of the building to appreciate the murals covering its walls.
