[Sayram Lake introduction] Sayram Lake is located at the southwestern end of Bortala Mongol Autonomous Prefecture in Xinjiang, at the northern foot of the western Tianshan Mountains. This alpine lake and grassland national scenic area features natural landscapes including lakes, wetlands, grasslands, forests, and snow-capped mountains. Its main activities include sightseeing, eco-tourism, exploring the historical culture of the ancient Silk Road's northern route, and experiencing the ethnic customs of Mongolian and Kazakh minorities. Sayram Lake transforms with the seasons. In spring and summer, flower fields bloom in abundance, while golden fall brings a striking contrast between sky and water. Winter turns the lake into a dreamscape, with dancing ice crystals, pillars, curtains, and coral formations. Ice roses bloom freely, and mysterious blue ice eyes appear in ever-changing forms. Throughout the day, the lake presents shifting spectacles - morning glow, sunset hues, rain mist, sea of clouds, lightning, rainbows, and mist cascades. Sayram Lake covers a vast area, with a circular road around the lake spanning approx. 90 km. The lakeside scenery is exceptionally beautiful. Most visitors depart from Urumqi and arrive at the lake in the afternoon to enjoy the sunset before staying overnight. The next day, they can admire the sunrise and daytime lakeside views before heading to Huocheng, Ili, and other destinations. During the lake loop, you'll also encounter cultural relics such asGenghis Khan's Command Platform, Film and Television City, etc. These cultural structures stand quietly by the lakeside on the plateau, evoking a profound sense of melancholy and timeless grandeur. Nalati Scenic Area is located in the heart of the Tianshan Mountains and the eastern end of the Ili River Valley, a subalpine meadow grassland formed on ancient alluvial deposits. Legend has it that when the westward-expanding Mongol army crossed mountains to reach this place, they suddenly saw a sunlit plain carpeted with flowers. The soldiers exclaimed "Nalati," which means "the place with sunlight" in Mongolian, giving the area its enduring name. The attraction integrates snow-capped mountains, forests, valleys, meadows, and rivers, primarily divided into several sections: the River Valley Grassland, Sky Grassland, Panlong Valley Trail, and Wolta Jiaota. Along the River Valley Grassland by the Gongnaisi River, visitors can find Tawusani (meaning "beautiful mountain valley" in Kazakh), ancient tombs from the Wusun people of the Han dynasties, and the Grassland Tribe recreating Wusun tribal life. Following the uphill ride on the mountain road leads to the Sky Grassland, a high-altitude meadow suspended among peaks. The Tianjie Terrace at the boundary between the valley and grassland offers expansive views, while Snow Lotus Valley at the trail's end is often shrouded in mist, with snow lotuses blooming in midsummer. The Panlong Valley Trail is a forest loop without backtracking, flanked by towering Tianshan spruces. The Wolta Jiaota section is ideal for hiking, with the Tianxian Terrace providing stunning views of sunrise above sea of clouds. From June to September each year, the grassland enters its golden season, with lush green pastures and blooming wildflowers everywhere. Kazakh herders drive herds of cattle, sheep, and horses into summer pastures, where scattered yurts and curling smoke create a picturesque scene. Visiting the attraction during this time allows you to ride horses, try archery, and dress in traditional ethnic costumes. You might also encounter traditional equestrian activities like horse racing, kokpar (goat grabbing), and kyz kuu (girl chasing), experiencing the authentic Kazakh nomadic culture between snow-capped mountains and meadows.

Yili River Scenic Areais located on the south side of Yining City and is an open waterfront scenic area that stretches along both banks of the Ili River. The Ili River flows from east to west and is the mother river that the people of Ili have relied on for generations. With the protection and restoration of the river's ecology as its foundation, the scenic area relies on the wetlands, forest belts, and riverside trails on both banks to connect the natural riverbank, urban leisure, and local folk culture. It is not only a place for tourists to view the river and the sunset but also a daily destination for locals to walk, jog, and cycle. The signature scene here is the "Ili River Bridge sunset": The Ili River Bridge spans the river and is one of the landmarks in this area. In the evening, as the sun sets, the bridge's silhouette, the river water, and the sky blend into one, making it a favorite spot for photography enthusiasts. From time to time, you can also encounter local newlyweds who come specifically to the bridge to take wedding photos or hold weddings, adding a touch of human warmth to the riverbank. The scenic trail along the north bank is lined with trees and offers a wide view, making it suitable for hiking or cycling. There are viewing platforms along the way where you can stop at any time to enjoy the river view. After nightfall, the bridge lights up, and the light strips reflecting on the water surface create a different kind of charm. The scenic area was built in 2014, successfully established as a National 4A-level Tourist Attraction in 2015, and launched the creation of an autonomous region-level tourist resort in 2020. It is a crucial core project in the overall planning and construction of Yining's urban tourism. In the past two years, to provide a better experience for tourists and citizens and to enrich the scenic area's business offerings, the scenic area has developed projects such as Yishui Qinshen, Yishui Youyang, the water tea house, the shouting fountain and windmill corridor, Hello Bike, the scenic area tourist reception center, high-altitude wire walking, the North Bank Elf Home family-friendly park, the outdoor volcanic camping site, the cute pet park, and the Ili River lighting project, showcasing the unique charm of this place. The beautiful banks of the Ili River feature towering snow-capped peaks and lush trees. Near the section of the river in Yining, there is the famous Ili River Bridge, which is a great spot for photographing the sunset. The "Ili River Bridge sunset" has become a popular subject for photography enthusiasts.

It's a great hotel with excellent value for money and a convenient location. I'd probably stay here again if I went back. The front desk staff were friendly, and the breakfast was decent.

Narat Scenic Area, nestled deep in the Tianshan Mountains of Yili, Xinjiang, is a national 5A-level scenic area and a world-renowned alpine valley grassland. Its name in Mongolian means "the place where the sun first shines." The entire scenic area is mainly divided into three sections: the Sky Grassland, the River Valley Grassland, and the Panlong Valley. Snow-capped mountains, spruce trees, streams, and rolling meadows blend perfectly, creating a rich tapestry of landscapes where every snapshot is a magnificent scene. The Sky Grassland is expansive; from the Tianjietai (Heavenly Platform), one can see snow-capped peaks stretching to the horizon, scattered yurts, and grazing cattle and sheep. The River Valley Grassland is gentle and lush; from Tawusani, one can enjoy panoramic views of four different mountain ranges. The Panlong Valley trail winds through a deep forest, its ever-changing light and shadow creating a poetic atmosphere. The area is home to the Kazakh people, who have preserved their authentic nomadic customs, offering a variety of experiences including horseback riding, family visits, and camping. Wildflowers bloom everywhere from June to August, making it a great place to escape the summer heat; in autumn, the forests turn golden, creating another breathtaking scene. The scenic area is vast, so it's recommended to allow at least one day, pack warm clothes, and slowly savor the unique vastness and romance of the Tianshan grasslands. It's a must-see stop when visiting Yili.

Strolling along Yining's Liuxing Street, sunlight bathes the streets in an exotic atmosphere. Century-old alleys wind like poems, their blue walls and stained glass windows telling the story of time. Uyghur artisans strike bronze instruments, their clinking echoing through time. The aroma of baked buns fills the street corners, and the rhythm of hand drums awakens the dormant bricks and tiles. Every tile here is engraved with a story, and behind every carved wooden door lies a warm smile. The hexagonal streets and alleys, like blooming flowers, quietly embrace diverse cultures.

Yili Old Town Cultural Tourism Area (Kazanqi Subdistrict) Kazanqi, now officially known as the Yili Old Town Cultural Tourism Area (a 5A-level scenic area, formerly known as the Kazanqi Folk Tourism Area), is located in the old city of Yining. Kazanqi means "pot-maker" in Uyghur. Two to three hundred years ago, this area was a gathering place for various craftsmen, including pot casting, blacksmithing, and leatherworking, hence the name. It is a living residential area, not a man-made replica of an ancient scenic spot. Tens of thousands of locals still live here, a multi-ethnic community that has coexisted for generations, earning it the nickname "museum of folk dwellings." Features: 1. Yili Blue Dwellings: The varying shades of blue in the courtyards and colorful carved wooden doors of the houses along the streets and alleys create what is known as the "Blue Town." This blue is a color blended by the locals themselves, complementing the flowing water, flowers, and grapevines in front of the houses. It blends Uyghur, Russian, and Chinese architectural styles, with over 300 old buildings dating from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China period perfectly preserved. 2. Hadik Carriage: A traditional six-stick horse-drawn carriage with a melodious bell, a signature experience in the old town. Ride through the blue alleyways, where the driver will explain the history of the streets and lanes – a truly iconic experience (at your own expense). 3. Folk Customs and Food: • Visit a family in one of the marked homes, enjoy milk tea and fruits under a grape trellis, and experience Uyghur family life. • Must-try street food: handmade traditional ice cream, baked buns, lung noodles, and kvass. • Highlights: Tudahongbai Courtyard, Shaanxi Grand Mosque, old shops, and intangible cultural heritage handicrafts (leather goods, wood carvings, carpets). Practical Travel Information: The street area is free and open all day; carriage rides, family visits, and museums are charged separately, no reservations required. Search "Yili Old Town Cultural Tourism Area North Gate" on your navigation app; entering from the North Gate is the most convenient. Best time to visit: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, when the light is soft, there are fewer crowds, and it's the best time to take photos against the blue walls. Arrive at Kazanchi, the old town of Yining, Yili. Kazanchi means "pot-maker." This nearly 300-year-old town still has tens of thousands of residents, making it a truly living blue-themed town. The courtyard walls, in varying shades of Yili blue, are paired with colorful carved wooden doors, and a babbling brook flows in front of each door. You can ride in a Hadi horse-drawn carriage, accompanied by the crisp sound of bells, through the alleys. Hidden in the alleys are century-old handmade ice cream shops, freshly baked buns, and you can even step into a local family's courtyard and enjoy milk tea under a grape trellis. It blends Uyghur, Russian, and Chinese architectural styles, a fusion of multi-ethnic cultures. This isn't a man-made tourist hotspot; the alleys are filled with the authentic, everyday life of the old town of Yili.

The Ili River rolling westward Most of China's rivers flow eastward into the sea, but the Ili River, China's largest inland river, rolls westward, rushes toward Kazakhstan, and finally flows into Lake Balkhash. The Ili River Scenic Area is a good place to watch the sunset. The surging river chases the setting sun to the west. This should be a unique sunset view in China! On the other side of the river, the towering Ferris wheel flashes neon lights, the Ili River Bridge in the east is reflected in the afterglow, and the snow-capped mountains in the distance are looming! In addition to the snow-capped mountains and grasslands, the Ili River sunset is also a scenery not to be missed in the Western Regions!

It was very close to my hotel, which was great, but the venue itself was quite small – I finished looking at it quickly. The decor was nice, but not many venues were open yet, perhaps because it wasn't peak season. There were also volunteer guides, which was nice. It was a great place to take photos.
