Located in Yanchi County, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Changchengguan Pass is the core component of the Yansui Town defense system of the Great Wall, built in 1531 by Wang Qiong, the General Administrator of Three Borders. Its naming breaks with the traditional practice of naming passes after places or directions, becoming the only pass along the entire Ming Great Wall directly named "Great Wall."
The construction of this pass marked a strategic upgrade in the Ming Dynasty's northwestern border defenses. Located at the transition zone between the Maowusu Desert and the Loess Plateau, it utilized the natural terrain to construct a triple defense system: desert, pass, and ravine.
