Miramare Castle
No. 1 of Best Things to Do in Friuli Venezia Giulia

Miramare Castle

4.7
4.5/5
9 reviews
Miramare Castle boasts stunning views of the Adriatic Sea, with its white exterior beautifully contrasting against the azure waters and sky. Both the castle's exterior and its interior viewing platforms offer breathtaking coastal scenery full of atmosphere. As a representative building from the Austro-Hungarian Empire era, the castle blends neoclassical style with contemporary designs. Its interior preserves the original furnishings of the archduke and duchess, offering visitors an immersive glimpse into the lifestyle of 19th-century European nobility. The castle is surrounded by meticulously maintained English gardens, featuring lush vegetation and winding pathways. Strolling through them offers an escape from urban noise while complementing the castle itself to create a dual experience of "architecture + nature."Grignano · 493m from downtown
Unity of Italy Square
No. 2 of Best Things to Do in Friuli Venezia Giulia

Unity of Italy Square

4.7
4.7/5
19 reviews
Unity of Italy Square is the main square of Trieste and one of the largest seaside squares in Europe. It is surrounded on three sides by tall white buildings, while the fourth side faces the bay. Once the main seaport of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, it was a prosperous port city and a center of music and literature, but it gradually declined after being incorporated into Italy. The square is surrounded by important buildings such as the Palazzo degli Elefanti, and many locals gather here, making it very lively.Trieste · 795m from downtown
Victory Lighthouse

Victory Lighthouse

4.1
This monument was built immediately after the end of World War I, thanks to the unwavering commitment of architect Arduino Berlam. The old lantern no longer served the port's needs, and a new lighthouse was needed to commemorate this historic moment. In fact, in addition to its role as a navigational safety feature, the Lighthouse of Victory served a dual purpose: to celebrate the transition of Trieste to the Kingdom of Italy and to commemorate those who died at sea during World War I. The lighthouse stands within the complex of Fort Cresic, one of the city's important Austro-Hungarian positions, dating back to the mid-19th century. Every element was designed to have a strong symbolic value. Now a major national monument, the lighthouse offers visitors the opportunity to observe the city from a panoramic perspective.Trieste · 3.3 km from downtown
Grotta Gigante

Grotta Gigante

3.7
Grotta Gigante is located near Sgonico in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy and is a distinctive local karst cave view. As the name suggests, the cave is impressive for its massive interior space. With expansive cave halls and huge stalactites, stalagmites, and rock walls formed over long periods of geological change, it is easy to feel the spectacular underground world shaped by nature once you step inside. After entering the cave, visitors can follow a designated route deep underground to admire diverse rock formations under lighting. As the route progresses, the surrounding space alternates between narrow passages and expansive openings, creating an experience completely different from the natural scenery on the surface. The temperature inside the cave is relatively stable. Even if the weather outside is hot, you can feel a distinct chill inside, so it is advisable to bring a light jacket when visiting.Sgonico · 6.8 km from Trieste

Trieste Cathedral

Trieste Cathedral

3.4
The Cathedral of Saint Justus was built in 1400. This cathedral combines two previous Christian churches, so it blends Ravenna and Byzantine styles. The interior of the church features 12th–13th century frescoes and mosaics depicting Saint Justus, as well as the Escorial Carlista chapel, which houses the remains of 9 members of the Spanish royal family.Trieste · 542m from downtown

Miramare Castle is also a very shocking site. The scale of the entire castle building is also very good. There are many good works of art inside. The large garden of the castle is also very unique.

Unification Square is very close to the city center. There are free travel routes nearby. You can see many churches and palaces. Many buildings are decades old. There is a big stone monument in the middle. When you come out of the train station and walk to the church, you will pass this small square with a monument in the middle.
