Things to do in Shangqiu

Today we visited all three scenic areas of the Han Dynasty Mausoleum. It was very impressive. The mausoleum was built by carving through the rocky mountain. The mausoleum is made entirely of stone, making it incredibly sturdy. The Queen's Mausoleum is the largest and has the most complex structure. It is definitely worth a visit. Friends who like historical architecture should definitely check it out.

The city wall is quite long; I didn't walk from the south gate to the east gate, I only went to the western end. Zhang Xun Temple and Yingtian Academy aren't very interesting to visit, but they carry a significant amount of historical and cultural significance.

The Fuzishan Scenic Area that I had been thinking about finally met on May Day in 2025. I also walked the glass plank road. With a good attitude, everything felt worth it. The most recommended thing is that there is a large courtyard on the right side of 500 meters from the scenic spot. There is a sign at the door saying "Mangshan Town Free Parking". It just so happened that the navigation showed that the parking lot was tight, so I simply parked here and walked over. This free parking is not a gimmick, it is real. When I left, I was ready to pay but no one charged me. I like Mangshan Town. A few suggestions: The sound effect of "Chen Cai's Foodless" is too poor. I didn't hear a word clearly from the beginning to the end of the performance, which affected the viewing experience. It's just a personal suggestion and cannot represent everyone.

Mangdang Mountain is located in Yongcheng, Henan Province. It is a national AAAAA-level scenic spot that combines natural wonders with historical heritage. As the "Han Culture Corridor", the scenic area has a rare group of Western Han Dynasty tombs in the world. The tombs of Liang Xiaowang and the Queen's Tomb were carved into the mountain and have exquisite structures. The "appearance" wonder of Liu Bang's Snake-Slaying Stele at night has been passed down for thousands of years; Confucius Mountain retains the remains of Confucius's teachings in the rain, and the Mangshan Temple is surrounded by smoke and fire, where Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism are integrated. In the unique limestone landform, geological relics such as ripples and fossils are like natural textbooks, adding a sense of humanistic depth to the mountains and rivers.

Yanbo Terrace, formerly known as Shangqiu, and commonly known as Huoxing Terrace and Vulcan Terrace, is located 3 miles southwest of the ancient city of Shangqiu in Suiyang District, Shangqiu City, Henan Province. It is an observatory site dating back more than 4,500 years. It is the earliest existing observatory in China and is a rare physical material for studying the history of China's astronomical development, with extremely high scientific research value.

Yingtian Academy, also known as Yingtianfu Academy, Suiyang Academy, Nanjing Academy, and Nandu Academy, was later upgraded to Nanjing Imperial Academy and became the highest institution of learning in the Northern Song Dynasty. It is also the only academy in ancient China that was upgraded to Imperial Academy. Most academies in the Northern Song Dynasty were located in mountainous areas, but Yingtian Academy was located in a bustling city, which became the main feature of Yingtian Academy. Yingtian Academy is known as one of the four ancient academies in China, along with Bailudong Academy in Lushan, Jiangxi, Yuelu Academy in Changsha, Hunan, and Songyang Academy in Dengfeng, Henan. It occupies an important position in the history of education, culture, and thought in China.

Mount Mangdang, which is only a little over 100 meters high, is regarded as the "place where the Han Dynasty rose" because of Emperor Gaozu's "uprising by slaying the snake". As the saying goes, "A mountain is not famous because of its height, but because of the immortals who live there; a river is not sacred because of its depth, but because of the dragons that live there!" The nearly 40-meter-high statue of Liu Bang stands majestically, with his clothes fluttering in the wind, showing the grandeur of the Han Dynasty!

It is reported that the architectural design of the museum is derived from the ancient city of Guide in Shangqiu. It perfectly displays the typical characteristics of the ancient city's layout of "high outside and low inside" and the structure of "city on city", and embodies the concept of a "miniature city" that collects, displays and exhibits Chinese Shang culture.

Zhang Xun Temple is located outside the south gate of the ancient city of Shangqiu. It was built to commemorate Zhang Xun, Xu Yuan and others who died defending Suiyang during the "Anshi Rebellion". In the second year of Tang Zhide, 757 AD, because Suiyang (now Suiyang District, Shangqiu City) was an important town in the Central Plains and its geographical location was very critical, Zhang Xun and Xu Yuan blocked the Anshi rebels in Suiyang and fought to the death. 6,800 people, with their iron will, blocked 130,000 troops and held the city for ten months!

When it comes to tourism in Shangqiu, there may not be many attractions other than the Shangqiu Museum. However, there are many beautiful places outside the city of Shangqiu. Hanliang Cultural Park is one of them. It follows historical elements and has many antique items.
