WenShuFang is an antique-style cultural block in Qingyang District, Chengdu, adjacent to Wenshu Monastery. Opened in 2006, the Wenshu Monastery area, where it is located, is one of Chengdu's three major historical and cultural conservation zones, alongside Kuanzhai Alley and Daci Temple. The block primarily features architecture in the traditional Sichuanese residential style, with teahouses, snack shops, intangible cultural heritage workshops, and Hanfu stores nestled among gray-tiled roofs, wooden doors, and courtyards. It is also a popular spot for locals to drink tea and chat. The main streets in the district each have their own distinctive features: Wuyuegong Street is dedicated to intangible cultural heritage, with workshops showcasing traditional crafts like Shu brocade, Shu embroidery, lacquerware, bamboo weaving, and silver filigree, where artisans can often be seen working on-site; Nanyue Lane is a hub for Hanfu culture, with a constant stream of people dressed in Hanfu taking photos against the backdrop of ancient-style gate towers and red walls, and the street also offers Hanfu rental and makeup services; Jinma Lane is the heart of old Chengdu flavors, where time-honored snacks like imperial walnut cakes and Zhang Liangfen from Dongzikou can be enjoyed from one end of the street to the other. When you need a break, you can stop at a teahouse for a bowl of covered-bowl tea. The district also hosts Sichuan opera performances, where you can enjoy face-changing, fire-spitting, and long-spout tea art while sipping tea, fully immersing yourself in Chengdu's unique blend of leisure and liveliness. When touring, you might as well combine this place with the nearby Wenshu Monastery into one route, visiting the ancient temple first and then exploring the alleys, which can be completed in half a day. Travelers planning to take Hanfu photos are advised to allocate more time for makeup, styling, and framing.

Zha Ga Na
No. 15 of Best Things to Do in Gansu-Qinghai Area

Zha Ga Na

7.7
4.3/5
4.3k reviews

Zha Ga Na, also known as Zha Ga La, is located in Yiwa Town, Diebu County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture. In Tibetan, the name means "stone box." Surrounding limestone cliffs enclose the area like natural city walls, and Tibetan-style wooden houses are arranged in tiers along the slopes, forming a unique stone-city Tibetan village view. In the 1920s, the Austrian-American botanist and explorer Joseph Rock visited and stayed here many times, marveling that it resembled "the birthplace of Adam and Eve." Zha Ga Na consists of four natural villages arranged sequentially from bottom to top—Dongwa Village, Yeri Village, Dari Village, and Daiba Village—connected by a winding road. At the entrance of Dongwa Village at the foot of the mountain stands a massive rock known as the Great Stone Gate, and the small hillside beside it is a vantage point for capturing low-angle panoramic shots of the village built along the mountain. At the higher elevation of the village sits Lasang Temple, a Gelug Tibetan Buddhist monastery originally built during the Shunzhi era of the Qing Dynasty, with its assembly hall and Guanyin Hall nestled among the rocky peaks. Following the road upward to Yeri Village, Tibetan villagers can often be seen working in the open highland barley fields nearby, and the village also has a "Rock's Cabin" homestay where visitors can stay. Continuing upward past Dari Village, there is a viewing platform with an expansive field of view that overlooks the entire village and the full face of the cliff behind it—the ancient wooden roofs and earthen-wall buildings are clearly layered within the surrounding precipices, making it an ideal spot for panoramic photography. In the early morning, clouds and mist often swirl among the cliffs, while at night the sky is filled with brilliant stars—two of the most recognizable natural scenes here. A walk of about one hour up the mountain behind Dongwa Village leads to a hilltop temple, and the Tibetan-style houses passed along the way retain traditional mortise-and-tenon wooden structures. There is another hiking route of about two days behind the mountain leading to stone forests and alpine lakes, with pristine scenery along the way, suitable for outdoor enthusiasts; it requires one night of camping, and you can rent a horse in the village and hire a groom to guide the way.

Wenshufang — a colorful historic quarter right next to Wenshu Monastery. Narrow traditional-style lanes, souvenir shops, teahouses, and plenty of street food. Noisy, crowded, and full of atmosphere — a striking contrast to the silence behind the monastery walls. A great spot to stroll, grab a bite, and pick up souvenirs.

●Tourism Experience: The ancient city is characterized by its Three Kingdoms culture, with its antique cobblestone streets and alleys exuding a rich historical atmosphere. Visitors can experience a leisurely, lively atmosphere and admire the confluence of three rivers and the Tai Chi-like landscape of mountains and water. Folk performances and storytelling can be watched at certain times, and the nighttime scenery is particularly beautiful. Overall, it's a great place for a leisurely stroll, taking photos, and sampling Sichuan snacks. ●Tourism Suggestions: The ancient city streets are free to enter. It's recommended to start by strolling along the main street, allocating half a day to a full day. Staying overnight allows you to fully appreciate the nighttime views. Some smaller attractions charge admission, but a combined ticket is a good deal. Zhaohua West Market is a hub for food, where you can try hot pot fish, Taishou fried dough twists, and wooden hammer pastries, among other delicacies. ●Transportation: High-speed rail + tourist shuttle bus (highest recommended): A direct tourist bus service from Guangyuan High-speed Railway Station to Zhaohua Ancient City provides a seamless connection between the high-speed rail and the scenic area. Departure times: 9:50, 11:50, 13:10, and 15:10 from Guangyuan Station, 4 trips daily. Ticket price: 10 yuan/person from Guangyuan Station, 9 yuan/person from other stations. Travel time: Approximately 30-50 minutes, directly to the scenic area visitor center. Ticketing methods: Online purchase via the "Guangyun Shenma" mini-program, or purchase at the station window. Stops along the route: Guangyuan High-Speed Railway Station → Nanhe Bus Station → Yushu Jiayuan → International Trade City → Quhui Health Center → Zhaohua Ancient City. Minibus: Take the Guangyuan-Zhaohua minibus from Guangyuan Nanhe Bus Station, approximately 30 minutes, 9 yuan/person; or take Baolun No. 1 bus, approximately 20 minutes, 2 yuan/person. Driving: (The Zhaohua entrance/exit is currently under renovation and cannot be accessed; it is recommended to use the nearest entrance/exit to the highway). Jingkun Expressway (G5), Guangnan Expressway, Jianzhao Highway (starting from Jianmen Pass, 33 kilometers in total, about a 50-minute drive, with beautiful scenery along the way, is a top choice for self-driving tours). Parking fee: 10 yuan/car for small cars. Parking is available at the Ancient City Visitor Center, West Gate Parking Lot, and West City Parking Lot. ● Facilities and Services: The scenic area staff are generally enthusiastic and will proactively provide directions and introduce tour routes. Major paid attractions support QR code verification, making entry convenient. Accommodation, parking, and dining facilities are readily available within the ancient city, and the environment is generally clean and hygienic. ● History and Culture: Zhaohua, formerly known as Jiameng, is known as "the first county in Bashu and the second capital of Shu," and is one of the best-preserved Three Kingdoms ancient cities in China. The city retains Ming and Qing dynasty streets and alleys with a T-shaped layout paved with bluestone slabs, also featuring military defensive characteristics. Numerous Three Kingdoms relics exist, such as Jiameng Pass, Fei Yi's Tomb, and Tianxiong Pass, and stories like Zhang Fei's battle against Ma Chao are still told today. ●Notes: The ancient town has a strong commercial atmosphere with many shops along the street; some small attractions (such as the county government office, examination hall, and city wall) have simple interiors and are not very interesting, so choose according to your own preferences; there are significantly more tourists during holidays, and some areas are crowded, so it is recommended to visit during off-peak hours.

The cliffside Buddhist sculptures are quite impressive and well worth seeing. The stairs are narrow, so be careful going up and down. It's advisable to carry nothing, including backpacks and bottled water, and be aware of falling objects.

Zhagana is unbelievably beautiful! Surrounded by rocky mountains, the Tibetan village is shrouded in mist in the mornings, like a thin veil draped over it. Standing on the viewing platform, you can see terraced fields stretching out, with yellow rapeseed flowers and green barley, set against the backdrop of shimmering snow-capped peaks in the distance—every snapshot is wallpaper-worthy. The air is filled with the scent of grass and cooking smoke, and yaks graze leisurely. It's so relaxing, you won't want to leave!

The flowers were so beautiful, it felt like a sea of flowers and a mountain of blossoms. Seeing the pink lilies in person was especially special; it was a truly unique experience. They smelled wonderful, unlike any other flower, and their symbolism was lovely too.
