Taoyangli Historical and Cultural District

4.6/5

Taoyangli Historical and Cultural District is located in the heart of Jingdezhen's old town, a historic neighborhood that grew around the ruins of the imperial kiln from the Ming and Qing dynasties. The old saying "Taoyang thirteen li, with tens of thousands of households" refers to this area. The imperial porcelain used by the royal families of the Ming and Qing dynasties was exclusively produced by the imperial kiln here, while rejected tribute items were shattered and buried on-site. The layers of underground porcelain fragments share the same origin as the collections in the Palace Museum, making this place often referred to as the key to understanding the porcelain capital. The core attractions of the district are concentrated around the ruins of the Taoyangli Historical and Cultural District and the imperial kiln museum. The ruins of the Taoyangli Historical and Cultural District have now been transformed into an archaeological site park, preserving relics such as kilns and workshops. The Longzhu pavilion, perched atop Zhushan hill, has been the iconic structure of the imperial kiln since the Ming dynasty and later became the symbol of Jingdezhen. The Zhushan hill beneath it was formed by layers of discarded porcelain fragments from imperial kilns throughout history. Nearby, the imperial kiln museum draws inspiration from traditional egg-shaped wood-fired kilns, featuring multiple brick arches arranged in a staggered layout. Many exhibits in the museum are restored from porcelain fragments unearthed at the site, including the Ming dynasty blue-and-white dragon jar—a signature exhibit pieced together from tons of discarded dragon jar fragments. Adjacent to the museum, the Xu family kiln, an old wood-fired kiln, still operates periodic firings. During kiln openings, the gate is wide open, allowing visitors to watch artisans retrieve freshly fired porcelain from saggars. The district also features winding alleyways lined with kiln-brick residences, guild halls, porcelain shops, and remnants of modern ceramic industry. The restored South goods street and Red shop street now host old teahouses, taverns, music bars, and craft workshops where you can observe traditional processes like clay throwing and porcelain painting, with some workshops offering hands-on experiences. It's recommended to set aside half a day for the visit—start with the kiln site and museum, then meander through the streets around Zhongshan north road and Longgang lane, where many historic courtyard houses hidden in deep alleys await patient discovery.Jingdezhen · 35.7 km from Leping

Sanbao International Ceramic Village

There is an old-fashioned farm house and ceramic workshop more than ten miles southeast of Jingdezhen, called Sanbao International Ceramics Village. The whole village seems to be an ordinary and very old farmhouse. Inside the door is a clay marker with many pieces of porcelain and pottery works embedded in it. There is a small stream introduced from the outside in the yard. The water is clear to the bottom. Some of the porcelain bowls and pieces were half buried in the mud, the ancient wooden farm tools and local daily necessities were quietly left aside, and the big red Spring Festival couplets were pasted on the log doors. The long gazebo made of logs, and the rice barrels of the farmhouse made of logs are chairs. It's casual, simple, unstructured, and wild. Here are the original life scenes and plots: the house was bought from the villagers, the courtyard wall was built by the villagers using the "dry base" process 20 years ago, and the furnishings in the house were also produced by the villagers more than 20 years ago. Living utensils, nearly 10 artisans here use primitive methods to produce ceramics and pottery tools. In addition to the living area, there are studios, pottery halls, traditional porcelain making tools, wood-burning kilns, folk artists, etc., Guanyin with broken arms, headless Bodhisattva, even a slag cake, a bowl bottom , a deformed dragon cylinder. This codified tradition has become fully modern. Sanbao Village is a ceramic workshop courtyard of an old-fashioned farmhouse. The earthen courtyard wall is built by "dry base", and a crystal clear stream runs through the courtyard. The courtyard is full of traces of years of hard work - porcelain bowls and pieces, many of which are half-covered in the mud.Jingdezhen · 31.9 km from Leping

Definitely worth a visit! I had imagined it would be inside a cave, but I didn't expect it to be so thrilling and fun. We experienced hiking, felt the excitement, and also saw porcelain. The kids were very satisfied – a truly unique experience!

The hotel is nice and very close to Taoyangli Scenic Area. The front desk staff are very welcoming. There are also many places to eat nearby. There are buses to the high-speed rail station right outside the hotel. Very convenient.

Thank you, Ms. Yu, for your professional, meticulous, and engaging lecture. In just two hours, we learned about the history of porcelain development from the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, as well as the Republic of China and the founding of the People's Republic of China, and appreciated exquisite porcelain pieces from each dynasty. Furthermore, Ms. Yu used her extensive professional knowledge to introduce various methods for identifying the age, type, use, style, and quality of porcelain, opening a new world for us. She even thoughtfully reminded us of the precautions for taking photos with the Silent Buddha. Her lecture was truly sincere and packed with valuable information. This trip was incredibly rewarding and I'm full of energy! 🥰

I live in Lilin Town. I'd known about this nearby attraction for a while, but never went, thinking it was just some rocks and nothing interesting. I finally went after the Chinese New Year this year and was pleasantly surprised – much more fun than I expected! I highly recommend it.

It's pretty good. Compared to Taoyangli and Taoxichuan, it's not too crowded. The main attractions are several ancient kiln sites, and a few people demonstrating the porcelain-making process in the workshops, allowing for close-up observation and interaction. There's also a porcelain music performance.

Mr. Wang's explanation was very clear and accurate, which gave me a deeper understanding of the imperial kiln ceramic culture of Jingdezhen. He was also very responsible, meticulous and thoughtful in his work. I will definitely visit Jingdezhen again to learn more about ceramic culture and listen to Mr. Wang's explanation again!

The lights of the stilted houses on the cliff face illuminate the mountainside, and the reflections in the stream create a truly immersive fantasy atmosphere. The best spots for taking photos are the Moon-Viewing Bridge, the Hundred-Goose Bridge, and the Cliff Library.
