Mugecuo(Full name:Mugecuo, located in the middle section of the Gongga Mountains, is about 17 km from Kangding city center. It is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction, a World Natural Heritage nominee, and a key scenic area. The attraction serves as a core component of the "Two-Hour Economic Circle Around Gongga Tourism." With an elevation of 2,800–3,780 m, it lies at the northern foot of the Hengduan Mountains, part of the Daxue Mountain Range, and marks the western edge of the Sichuan Basin.Qinghai-Tibet PlateauThis transitional zone features a water area of nearly 4 km² with depths exceeding 70 meters. Most of the water comes from melted snow off the Nuwa Snow Mountain behind it, resulting in exceptional visibility of approximately 6–10 meters. The attraction showcases a stunning landscape with alpine lakes, primeval forests, hot springs, snow-capped peaks, peculiar rock formations, and the 8 km-long Thousand Waterfalls Gorge. The ingeniously designed scenic spots make it an ideal destination for sightseeing, recreation, relaxation, recuperation, fitness, summer retreats, and scientific research. The attraction is located in the sub-humid climate zone of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, featuring cool summers and autumns but severe cold in winter and spring. The specific climate conditions are as follows: From late December to February, the lake surface freezes, thawing in March. Temperatures remain low before April. During summer, the average monthly temperature ranges from 10–14°C. Due to the high-altitude terrain, the attraction experiences significant daily temperature variations, with warm afternoons—visitors should prepare for cold weather. Snowfall occurs after late October, offering scenic snow views, though snow accumulation is short-lived. Visitors should pack appropriate clothing according to the season and climate characteristics and be mindful of altitude sickness, carrying necessary medication if needed. The scenic area covers approximately 350 km², consisting ofRhododendron Gorge,Fangcaoping,Kangding Love Song (Mugecuo) Scenic Area - Seven-Color LakeYaochi Hot Springs, Mugecuo (Wild Man Lake), andRed Sea GrasslandSix attractions combinationNearby, there are several other alpine lakes and hot springs, where pristine forests, grasslands, and snow-capped mountain views blend seamlessly. The attraction boasts unique local customs, serving as the birthplace of love songs and the cradle of Khampa culture. It is also the starting point for Sichuan-Tibet travel. The Fangcaoping grassland spans over 60,000 square meters, divided into inner and outer sections by the central white pagoda. Every June, this lush green meadow covered with Gesang flowers served as one of the primary filming locations for both the movie "The New Love Song of Kangding" starring Alec Su and the TV series "The Warriors" produced by August First Film Studio to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Red Army's Long March victory. The Mugecuo Scenic Area (Kangding Love Song) - Seven Color Lake is located at an altitude of 3,200 meters, forming a plateau lake where lake water blends with hot springs. The crescent-shaped lake covers approx. 20 hectares with a depth of over 20 meters, surrounded by forests and meadows in serene tranquility. Its crystal-clear waters shift through seven hues under sunlight and weather changes, hence the poetic name. Azalea Valley connects to the east and joins Wild Man Lake to the west, stretching 8 km in length. Within the valley, streams alternate between rushing rapids and gentle flows, creating a sparkling spectacle. Both banks are lush with vegetation, particularly the pristine azalea forests that stand out. The azaleas here display a stunning variety of forms and vibrant colors. The valley weaves together hot springs, lakes, meadows, peculiar peaks, and cascading waterfalls, presenting an unspoiled natural landscape. Walking through it brings a sense of tranquility and delight. Mugecuo, also known as Wild Man Lake, is one of the high-altitude lakes in northern Sichuan. With a water area of nearly 4 sq km, it reaches depths of over 70m and sits at an elevation of 3,700m. Surrounded by mountains, forests, and grasslands, it's encircled by dozens of smaller lakes like Red Sea, Black Sea, and White Sea, creating a star-like constellation. The golden beach on its left side, renowned as Lovers' Beach, is a major highlight. Its fine, soft sand naturally appears golden—a rare phenomenon for lakeside formations in the western Sichuan plateau region. The Red Sea Grassland derives its name from the alpine lake—Red Sea. Local Tibetans refer to it as "Little Haizi" to distinguish it from the sacred lake "Mugecuo," known as "Big Haizi." With lush green grass and wildflowers everywhere, travelers can personally experience the breathtaking beauty of Gesang flowers beneath the snow-capped mountains, their delicate fragrance permeating the air.Kangding · 20.8 km from downtown

Jiagenba Town

11 reviews
Jiagenba Town has an average altitude of approx. 3,200 m and is a plateau valley where the Muya Tibetans have lived for generations. In the Tibetan language, "Jia" means wall and "Gen" means earth ridge; the place name comes from the tall earth ridge surrounding the northwest side of the town. The entire town area is connected by Tibetan villages such as Tiwu and Rio, and it is not far north of Xinduqiao Town, often chosen by travelers on self-drive tours of western Sichuan as a base for venturing into the western slope of Mount Gongga. From mid-to-late May to early June each year, the E'se flower, the official flower of Garzê Prefecture, blooms in large patches here. "E'se" means "radiance" in the Tibetan language. Tiny white flowers cover the gnarled branches of old trees, framing a picture of early summer pastoral life on the plateau alongside tender green highland barley fields and Muya dwellings built of stone and wood. The area around Tiwu Highland Barley Manor is one of the main viewing spots. The blooming period of the E'se flower is relatively short, often lasting only about 15 days. Muya culture is the essence here: ancient watchtowers stand among the villages, and traditions such as the Guozhuang dance and Muya wedding customs continue to this day. Walking slowly along the Liqiu River Valley, alpine meadows, calcified beaches, and crisscrossing highland barley fields appear in turn. Heading southwest, you can reach the Yaha Pass area to face the snow-capped peaks of Mount Gongga directly, which is why this place is also considered one of the viewing spots for the main peak and surrounding peaks of Mount Gongga.Kangding · 41.9 km from downtown

Zheduo Mountain is a spur of the middle section of the Daxue Mountains in the Hengduan Mountains, with an elevation of 4,962 m. The Sichuan-Tibet line of National Highway 318 crosses the mountain at a pass with an elevation of 4,298 m. "Zheduo" means "bending" in the Tibetan language. Winding up the mountain from the Kangding side, the road has many twists and turns. A local saying still circulates today: "The terrifying Erlang Mountain, the daunting Zheduo Mountain." It is also an important geographical and cultural boundary: Dadu River and the Yalong River divide their waters here. To the east lies a region of high mountains and deep valleys, while to the west, one enters the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Crossing the pass marks the official entry into the Kham Tibetan region. The pass is where most travelers stop: white pagodas stand tall, prayer flags flutter in the wind, and tourists often take photos in front of the stone tablet engraved with the words "Heading west out of Zheduo Mountain" and the altitude marker; when the weather is clear, you can also see the snow-capped peak of Gongga Snow Mountain at an elevation of 7,556 m from here. Descending from the pass, you enter Xinduqiao Town, known as the "photographer's paradise," where the light and shadows along the road and the Tibetan villages form a scenic corridor in western Sichuan.Kangding · 19.3 km from downtown

Moon Lake is at an elevation of approx. 3,600m, with crescent-shaped patches of meadow scattered across the lake, which is how it got its name. The water is crystal clear, and minerals in the lake create blue-green tones that shift with the light. The lakeside meadows are wide and open, and cattle and horses are often seen grazing at the water's edge. A typical activity is camping by the lake: pitch a tent on the meadow, watch the cattle and horses graze during the day, and at night the sky above is a clear highland starfield. If you enjoy hiking, you can take the lakeside trail and walk the loop at a leisurely pace, with layers of fir and evergreen oak surrounding you. In fall, the woods are streaked with red and yellow. If you have the energy, you can continue deeper into the mountains toward the higher Lotus Lake, and along the way you may encounter steaming natural hot springs.Kangding · 96.2 km from downtown

Lenggacuo Lake is located high on the western slope of Mount Gongga and is an alpine lake at an elevation of approx. 4,500 m. It faces the main peak of Mount Gongga directly, offering a close, head-on view. In clear, windless weather, the peaks of Mount Gongga are perfectly reflected on the lake's surface, earning it the nickname "Eye of Gongga" among photography enthusiasts. The highlights here depend on the light and weather. Sunrise and sunset are the best times to visit: the sunlight dyes the main peak a golden-red, creating the Golden sunrise effect, and the reflection in the lake changes color in sync. In midwinter, the lake freezes over, allowing you to frame the ice and snow-capped mountains together. Clouds on the mountain shift constantly, often leaving the snow-capped peaks partially hidden. Whether the reflection forms depends largely on the wind. To capture the mirror-like effect, it is best to visit on a clear, windless day and arrive at the lake early to wait for the light.Kangding · 59.2 km from downtown

To be honest, if you're just watching the sunset, it's not necessary. I didn't see the stars at night because I was worried about the return trip. The road back is difficult to travel and there are traffic jams. The road is narrow and has gravel. It would be 10 o'clock by the time I got back to Xinduqiao.

After exiting the tunnel from the national highway, turn right immediately and enter the rural road. It takes about 1 hour to reach the Lotus Sea National Forest Park. The parking place is Moon Lake. It is recommended to arrive before 5 pm, play along the lake, and return to the homestay in Lotus Village (6 kilometers) at night (good conditions). The next morning, enter the deep meadow of Moon Lake again to shoot. The light is best at around 9 am. At around 11 o'clock, take the van arranged by the scenic area (160 yuan/person) to enter the Lotus Lake. It takes 40 minutes to drive on the bad road. After arriving at the hot spring slope, you can only walk up the mountain for about 20 minutes to reach the Lotus Lake. Remember to make an appointment with the driver to wait at the hot spring slope before 3 o'clock, so that there is enough time to return to the scenic area and drive to Zimei Pass or Lisuohai to watch the sunrise Golden Mountain (Lenggacuo is not enough time)

On my trip to western Sichuan, as we drove to the Tagong Grassland, an endless expanse of green stretched out in the distance. The sky was low, the clouds like giant cotton candy hanging overhead, and Mount Yala, a dazzling white peak, marked the edge of the grassland. The wind was strong, making the prayer flags flutter loudly. I crouched down and touched the grass; my fingertips were damp with morning dew from the high plateau. A Tibetan woman led a horse over, asking if I wanted to ride. I shook my head and stood there for a long time, thinking nothing. The grassland was truly vast, so vast that it smoothed out all one's worries. After returning, whenever I felt down, I would pull out that photo. Some places, once is enough, but they remain in your memory for a long time.

Lenggacuo is a good place to see Gongga. However, you need to hike up and down the mountain. It is not far away. People with plateau hiking experience do not need to ride horses. They can hike up the mountain, which can save 200 yuan. Lenggacuo is recommended for seeing the reflection of Gongga in good weather. If the weather is bad, you don't need to go up.

I personally think it's worth a visit; it's incredibly beautiful. It's best to hire a car or drive yourself, as it will test your driving skills. (We booked a professional tour.) The Tibetan people on the mountain were very hospitable, and the scenery made me forget my worries. Under the sky, in the snow, looking at the snow-capped mountains—this feeling is something you can only experience firsthand! 👍
