🛑 Address: Sounkyo Gorge, Kamikawa-cho, Kamikawa-gun, Hokkaido
🚄 Transportation: From 'Kamikawa' Station on the JR Shimokitamon Line, take the northbound 'Sounkyo-Kamikawa Line' bus for 30 minutes to the final stop 'Sounkyo Gorge'
This place is one of the first to receive snowfall. During autumn, the view of the changing leaves is incredibly beautiful. In summer, there are many activities to enjoy, such as walking along various nature trails. The stunning nature here has earned the park the nicknames 'The Roof of Hokkaido' and 'God's Playground.'
♨️🌬 In February, we went to see the ice sculptures. The atmosphere was great and beautiful, but it was extremely cold. The wind was so strong that it was hard to move. If you plan to visit, make sure to dress warmly.

Sun and snow in Sahoro
We had a great Lunar New Year holiday at Club Med Sahoro. The staff and facilities are great and the kids thought it was the best holiday ever! The slopes are great for beginners and intermediate skiing and there were almost no queues for the lifts. The kids club at Club Med kept the kids entertained from breakfast until bedtime. Highly recommended holiday!
After a day's journey, I finally came to Hokkaido for skiing
❄️Finally arrived in Hokkaido
I've stayed at all the Club Meds in China over the past few years
I'm planning to stay at all of them in Japan in 2024
I have to say, the villages in Japan are so much fun
The GO team comes from 36 countries
It's even more interesting and diverse
Here's a little bit about my journey today
4:00-6:40 Hangzhou-Shanghai Pudong
8:40-13:00 Shanghai-Hokkaido Sapporo
15:15-18:00 Sapporo-Sahoro Hakkaido
I'll be hitting the powder snow tomorrow!
Mt. Tokachi
#thingstodo 100 famous mountains in Japan, Mt. Tokachi
I feel that the charm of this mountain is not conveyed when you climb it with a day trip piston. The longitudinal track before and after Mt. Tokachi is wonderful, and you can enjoy the mountain-like scenery of Hokkaido. Only around Mt. Tokachi is a rocky zone due to the influence of volcanoes, and it feels like you came to an alien planet. I felt that this series of unique landscapes such as high matsu belts, pebble belts, cliffs, and rocks was a wonderful place around this mountain.
From Bogakudai, if you are confident in your leg strength and endurance, it will be Mt. Tokachi via Mt. Biei, otherwise it will be a piston, but the scenery you can see is completely different. I think it's good to have a route to stay overnight at the Biei Fuji evacuation hut and then go down the mountain via Mt. Tokachi the next day. It was a superb view that made me want to traverse to Tomuraushi someday.
Astremb to the summit on August 29, 2023
From travelers from Hokkaido living in Tokyo
Daisetsuzan National Park
#thingstodo One of the best, most rugged national parks in the world. The wind is no joke on the peaks. Bring a windbreaker with a hood for any season.
Not a lot of water, so plan ahead! I went in late September and the fall colors were already in full swing.
Also the backcountry trails are very steep. If you have knee problems, probably don’t try to summit these mountains. It’s intense on the way back down.
But oh so beautiful. My photos don’t come close to capturing it.

【Design🌟】
The design of the public space incorporates many traditional elements of Hokkaido. You can delve into the hidden traditions of the Ainu, the indigenous people of Hokkaido in Japan. Known as 'Bear People', they use patterns and carvings to create crafts, decorating various daily necessities, expressing their understanding of nature.
-
【Rooms🛏】
The interior of the deluxe room is Japanese style, small but complete. The bathing area is divided into two separate wet and dry areas. Although the washing space is not large, it can still accommodate a bathtub and a washbasin.
-
The storage space is also well planned. The whole wall opens to reveal a cabinet, filled with hangers, which is really great. A foldable sofa bed is cleverly placed, so even if a large family stays, it can perfectly 'add a bed.'
-
The resort also has many room types suitable for family stays. For example, the small family superior room is very warm and cute. 27㎡ can accommodate two adults and one child.
-
【Restaurant🍽】
In addition to the buffet mode in the Daichi restaurant, there are also separate food pick-up windows, where chefs will cook and display on the spot, such as pork ribs, roast chicken legs, steaks, etc. every night.
-
If you like Japanese food, there will be surprises during lunch and dinner time, such as this time I tasted very fresh tuna crab meat rice, seafood well, salmon sushi, roe rice.
-
【Public Area💃】
The Club Med performance theater can make you have fun every night. For example, this time we enjoyed a professional live band specially from Europe, a concert-level live dance beauty, it is a visual and auditory feast!!
-
In addition, various themed party performances take turns on stage. Singing and dancing G.Os from all over the world will rehearse songs and dances for friends who come from afar.
-
Different themed parties will also be planned, such as fluorescent parties, cowboy parties, white parties, etc. Everyone will wear clothes of the same color, offering wonderful song medleys, costume shows... The brilliance of the singing and dancing stage is really not inferior to the singer idols!
-
【Parent-child🎪】
The mini club is an area where children aged 2 to 3 can play, with Lego blocks, small cars, and all kinds of small toys (if children of this age need G.O care, they need to pay extra).
-
【Fitness🏃】
Next to the conference room on the second floor of the main hotel building, there is an exclusive yoga space. There are yoga instructors who will start classes here every day. Popular Yin Yoga, Hatha Yoga, etc. can be experienced at the touch of a button.

Hokkaido
The snowfall in Japan is remarkable not only in quantity but also in reliability; you can certainly get much bigger and deeper snow dumps in coastal systems such as Whistler or New Zealand…. but, what Japan offers is a level of reliability of powder snow that’s unmatched anywhere else in the world. If you’re booking a dream ski holiday, that reliability counts for a lot!
In this post, I’m going to share a bit about the underlying mechanisms that make Japan’s snow system so good. I’ll share some pointers on when and where to make your trip to maximize the chances of daily dumps of deep, dry powder. Finally, I’ll share some resources to use to track the weather while you’re in Japan. We’ll also share some deeper dive reading material such as academic papers if you want to learn more.
KEY POINTS
With a lake effect operating at a massive oceanic scale, Japan produces some of the world’s best snow. Cold, dry Siberian air picks up great amounts of moisture before being dumped on coastal mountains as high quality powder snow. The lowland satoyuki effect in Hokkaido holds the snowclouds in place longer, emphasizing this ‘lake effect’. FYI, Japan offers some excellent weather forecasting tools, from basic to very advanced, including the Japan Met Agency’s ‘nowcasts’.
LAKE EFFECT AT OCEANIC SCALE
The key to the massive snow fall in Japan is that it is heavily driven by ‘lake effect’ snow. But, this isn’t like the lake effect snow of North America’s Great Lakes region, or the famous Salt Lake City powder snows of the Wasatch range. Japan’s lake effect snow is really ‘sea effect’ snow… and that means bigger, deeper dumps.
Lake effect snow occurs when cold, dry air passes over a relatively warm water body. Water evaoporates, saturating the air and also warming it. As the air rises, often helped by flowing up and over hills or mountains, it cools and precipitates the moisture as snow.
The recipe is simple:
Cold, dry air
Relatively warm body of water
