Stargazing at Mount John Observatory in Lake Tekapo, New Zealand
Lake Tekapo on New Zealand's South Island is renowned as one of the world's premier stargazing destinations. The night sky viewed from Mount John Observatory is particularly breathtaking, showcasing the Milky Way and the Southern Cross unique to the Southern Hemisphere✨. On this day, a sea of clouds formed, and we were able to witness the moon rising above it🌕—a rare sight, according to the guide. Even on a bright night with a large moon, countless stars were clearly visible⭐︎.
To fully enjoy the starry sky, joining a guided local tour is highly recommended. These tours offer a special experience where you can observe Saturn's rings and distant nebulae through dedicated telescopes, all while learning about astronomy🔭. Japanese-language tours are available, with guides providing detailed explanations for Japanese visitors.
Additionally, Tekapo is designated as a "Dark Sky Reserve," meaning there is minimal artificial light, allowing for an incredibly clear view of the stars. Only tours are permitted at night. Be sure to prepare for the cold, especially with proper foot protection🧦, as the awe-inspiring experience will make you forget the chill❄️.
If you're visiting New Zealand, a stargazing tour in Tekapo is an absolute must—a once-in-a-lifetime experience🌠.

Great for sunrises or sunsets.
Town of Tekapo
Mt John is fantastic viewing platform with a 360-degree panorama of the surrounding mountains, lakes and Mackenzie Basin flats.
From town of Tekapo, walk for roughly 3 hours along Mt John Walkway to reach the tip of the summit.
Direction - Walk past the Tekapo Springs complex and follow the track on the western side of Lake Tekapo. The track climbs up to Mt John Summit Track. Descend through the exotic forest back to where you started.
Once you are there, you will be rewarded with the fantastic view of the whole town of Tekapo, mountains, alps and lake.
The whole journey is about 4km from Town Center.
The pace is pretty easy to moderate with some slope and steps towards the summit.
When you reached the summit, you would reach the Mt John observatory.
Great for sunrises or sunsets.
Have a cup of coffee and cake at Astro Cafe. Relax and enjoy the tea break indoor or outdoor.
Toilet are very clean and fused with automatic air freshener keeping the toilet smell great.
For those who does not hiking and walk, you can choose to drive from town centre for a 2 minutes ride and park your car at the carpark.
At the base of the start of the walkway, you can bring your kids or your partner to the hub where you can do snow boarding, ice skating or just chill inside the hot large swimming pool.
Great for jogger in the evening along the lake to burn some calories while enjoying the lake view. #tekapo星空小鎮

Views for Days: The Magic from Mount John Observatory!
#summervacay
Climbing up to Mount John Observatory feels a bit like sneaking backstage at a show—except the star of the performance is the entire Mackenzie Basin laid out in all its jaw-dropping glory. When you reach the top, get ready to have your socks knocked right off by the endless panorama. Lake Tekapo below glows in that unreal shade of turquoise, the Southern Alps rise like a fortress of snow-capped peaks, and the sky seems so wide it could swallow you whole (in a nice way). It’s the kind of view that makes you want to spread your arms out, twirl around, and shout, “I’m on top of the world!”
And if you think it’s only spectacular by day, just wait until the sun goes down. As darkness falls, the observatory transforms into a gateway to the universe. You can peer through powerful telescopes and see the Milky Way spilling across the sky like a glitter explosion. Even if you don’t know a single constellation, you’ll feel like a cosmic explorer. Between the daytime vistas and the nighttime star shows, Mount John Observatory serves up beauty that’s out of this world—literally!

At the top of the hill, you get amazing 360 views of the surrounding region such as Lake Tekapo and Lake Alexandrina. The lakes were as blue as the sky.
There is a $8 charge to drive up the private road to the top. I would advise to come early as it is a single lane and could be packed at times. You can also find a little cafe where you can grab a coffee or food while enjoying the stunning scenery.
I would reccomend anyone to drive up just for the breathtaking views. Next time, it would be amazing to visit at night for stargazing.

Lake Tekapo is not a photo trick (with guide).
Lake Tekapo is really well-deserved. When I saw it on a sunny day, I couldn't believe my eyes. It was so blue that I doubted my life! 💙 Many people think the lake is not blue just because the weather is not right! A sunny day will definitely shock you! No need to edit! Here are a few places I recommend, you can follow my route, I strongly recommend you to go, you can take 800 photos!!!
1️⃣ Go to "Astro Cafe" in the morning. This coffee is amazing! I would call it "the most beautiful cafe on earth" ☕ The most worthwhile place in Tekapo! No objection!
The cafe is located at the "University of Canterbury Observatory", you must go here first, because it is only open until 2 pm, and vehicles entering the observatory need to queue, but we only waited for 20 mins, not too long... You can order some food and drinks to take pictures on the table, just learn from me how to take pictures hahaha 📸 (It is said to be open only on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, so we went on Friday to be safe)
2️⃣ There is a ⛰ big rock a few steps down from the cafe!!! You must go! A great place to take photos! I am tired of saying it, you will regret it if you don't go...
3️⃣ Then go to "Lake McGregor Campervan Site", a treasure place discovered by our group. The trees 🌲 by the lake are very beautiful. Sisters with good balance can sit on the trees to take pictures, like the movie poster of "Flipped"!
4️⃣ After going down the mountain, go to "Church of the Good Shepherd ⛪️", which is also a must-see church in Tekapo! You can walk to the lake from the church, and there are many lupines 🌸 this season, which are super beautiful~
5️⃣ If you want to have fine dining for dinner, you can go to "Dark Sky Diner" 🍽 with a good view. If you don't care about the environment, you can go to "Ramen Tekapo" 🍜. Asian food is not bad, which comforted my Chinese stomach!
