It's easy to overdose on Tulou scenic spots, especially if you spend a couple of days touring the various scenic areas. The Tianluokeng scenic area offers stunning landscapes and more authentic experience of Tulou life compared to some of the other 'themed' Tulou attractions.
Two days sightseeing is sufficient to get a real taste and feel for Tulou culture, especially after youve visited 2 to 3 different clusters. There are some lovely guest houses. We stayed at the Nanjing Tulou Culture 1949 resort. Aside from the family friendly rooms and Instagramable decor, the honestly cuisine is incredible.
Travelling as a family of 6 with 3 young children, a private hire car was a must and makes visiting Tulou attractions both convenient and allows you to go at your own pace. Our driver was local to the area so was able to take us to some less busy sights and give interesting insights.
the Tianluokeng Cluster is a beautiful place and once you navigate past the usual street vendors and eateries, you can absorb daily life in and around the cluster.
the high viewing platform is a must for the classic cluster photo of '4 dishes and 1 soup'.

fujian tulou
The Fujian tulou (also known as earthen building) are rural dwellings in the mountainous areas in China. They were constructed between the 12th and the 20th centuries, and unique to the Hakka. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fujian Province is in southeast China, north of Guangdong Province. The Hakka only built tulou in Fujian.
A tulou is a large building, constructed with load-bearing rammed earth walls. It is used as a residence by a group of families. Tulous have three or four floors: the first floor for kitchens and dining rooms; the second floor for grain stores; and the third and fourth floors for bedrooms.
In the past, tulous played a significant role in protecting the Hakka from attacks. Residents could easily mount an all-round defense, and the vulnerable entrances were strongly reinforced.

The Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster🍃
My boyfriend and I rented a car for 2 days to look around Zhangzhou. We went to Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster which is one of Fujian's landmarks. We paid 180rmb for 2. Getting there was quite exciting at the same time a bit risky because of the road?! When we got there and saw the buildings, I think they are cob buildings shaped like beautiful plum blossoms. Some locals are selling some stuffs. You can see some shops and restaurants. We even decided to have our dinner there since trip coming back would take as long. Big servings of food we couldn't finish it. As you move down the mountain path, the changing viewing angle seems to make the buildings interesting. They look great especially when the weather is fine. It's a great place to take pictures or shall we say Instagrammable views around. Here are some photos I took.

Fujian Tuluo’s
Getting There - We hired a private driver that picked us up at our hotel. The driver took us to various view points and Tuluo’s.
It was a great site to visit. The Tuluo’s offer a different insight into the culture groups here in China. Walking inside the Tuluo’s one can observe how the locals enjoy their lives.
One can purchase tickets at the ticket hall and just take the day as it comes. On busy days be prepared for waiting as the roads are small and traffic can be slow.
Definitely worth the visit.

Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster
Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, which consists of four rotundas and a square tulou in the center, is an arrangement of location that represents the recycling derivation of the Five Elements (Metal, Wood, Water, Fire and Earth) in ancient Chinese philosophy. This distinctive composition of architectural structures and shapes, receiving a commendation as "a unique, legendary rural construction model in the world" from the UNESCO, has been a symbol of Fujian Tulous and become one of the Scenic Villages of China and Villages of Chinese History and Culture as well.

Hidden attractions in Fujian: Tianluokeng Tulou Group.
mentioned Fujian, the first time everyone thinks about it is the photo of Gulangyu. The small island is sunny, warm and humid, and is very popular with tourists.
In addition to enjoying a slow life in Gulangyu, Fujian has a small attraction not to be missed. It is the earth building of Zhangzhou. Before the fire of the anime "Big Fish Sea Bream", few tourists visited.
Tulou is a building constructed of earthen walls, which are round, semi-circular, square, etc. The earth building was initially square, and considering the ventilation and lighting, it evolved into a round shape with the final rain and dew. Generally for a large family to live, the building can store food, raise livestock and even have necessary facilities such as water wells. This kind of design considers the home while taking into account the defense. The earth building is like a sturdy big fortress. If you encounter an enemy attack, you only need to close the gate. The guards will be guarded by several young and old people.
Cangzhou's rich bamboo shoots, fresh bamboo shoots taste smooth and juicy, is a must-have farmer's dish. After the spring rain, the bamboo shoots yield is particularly good, and the bamboo shoots are dried, which not only locks the original flavor of the bamboo shoots, but also facilitates storage and transportation.
I deliberately experienced a night of earth building life. The room is the oldest window, the original civil structure, the sound insulation is not good, the ear of the early morning is filled with the voices of various neighborhoods and cockpits, but this is the original country life. In the dead of night, about three or five friends are talking on the candlelight night, quite charming.
Wingolee.
Attracting us to choose the Nanjing Tulou, it is mainly the four-story building of the earth building. Some people say that like plum blossoms, some people say that they are like flying saucers, and there is a more grounded "four dishes and one soup".
It takes about three kilometers to drive from Yuchang Building. There is a viewing platform on the middle of the road. You can park from the opposite angle.
Then suggest to go directly to the observation deck, overlooking the panorama, and finally drive back to the village entrance parking lot, enter the interior of the earth building, and then climb from the village channel to the observation deck to see the night scene, and meet the right weather. Go see the fireflies.
Dwelling in the interior of the Tulou group at night, there are no outsiders except for the individual tourists who live here at night. The residents in the earth building or chatting or cooking, the air is a leisurely and fragrant smell, but also the taste of life.

Summer in Tulou.
Fujian's Nanjing Tulou in Zhangzhou is an important representative of Chinese residential architecture and one of the world's most unique mountain village residential buildings, represented by the Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster. Nanjing Tulou comes in various shapes and sizes, including the common round and square shapes, as well as oval, five-phoenix, half-moon, armchair, L-shaped, bagua, apron, and convex shapes. While inheriting and innovating traditional raw earth building techniques, Nanjing Tulou also inherits the essence of traditional Chinese culture, serving as a testament to the cultural tradition of living together as a clan. Every early summer, the tulou dwellings and terraced fields complement each other, creating a stunning paradise on earth. The lush greenery stretches for miles, the fields are white, and the birds sing for miles, full of vitality, nurturing the tulou people's tireless pursuit of a better life.

Tulou: Ancient Miracle of Fujian
#ancienttown
Tulou is a fortress-type residential complex in Chinese architecture, common in Fujian and Guangdong provinces.
Toolows can be square or round in shape. The first Tulou were built by representatives of the Hakka people, who migrated from the north to the southern regions of China during the internecine wars during the Tang Dynasty. Each tulou has all the amenities to support the life of the population. There are warehouses, wells and places to relax. In fact, Tulou quickly evolved into small Chinese fortresses of 4-8 buildings.
The walls reach a thickness of 3 meters, there are simply no gaps. In order to ensure maximum strength, the walls were built from a combination of materials. In them you will find stone, wood, bamboo and much more. Imagine that such a wall could easily withstand a direct shot from a cannon.
Most toolows are round or rectangular in shape. Surprisingly, in a mountainous area, these buildings were well blown by the winds, which provided residents with comfortable conditions outside the walls of these fortifications.
From a distance, they look like huge reddish-red anthills or beehives. Once they housed entire tribal communities. These are the so—called tulou, or "earthen castles" - fortress-type residential complexes that have been common since the 12th century in the territory of the modern Chinese provinces of Fujian and Guangdong.
The local villages and small towns looked like miniature family kingdoms, protected by high earthen walls with tiled roofs and wide cornices.
The first Tulou originated during the Tang Dynasty, when internecine wars forced the Hakka people to move from the north to the southern regions of China. This happened during the Song and Yuan dynasties, which took full shape at the end of the Ming, during the Qing Dynasty and during the period of the Republic of China. The oldest and youngest adobe houses that have survived to this day are located in the Chusi complex, the Jiqinglou house with a diameter of 66 meters has a history of 600 years, the Shanqinglou house with a diameter of 31 meters is only 30 years old.

For this photo, I trekked through a group of earthen buildings
For this photo, I trekked through 4️⃣ groups of earthen buildings||Speaking of Fujian, everyone should be familiar with the earthen buildings. The earthen buildings are not only a secluded paradise hidden in the mountains but also represent the wisdom of ancient people.
1️⃣ Tianluokeng earthen building cluster: (Four dishes and one soup) Standing on the viewing platform to take photos of the lit-up earthen buildings creates a full atmosphere. If you're lucky, you might encounter a foggy day, which gives the earthen buildings shrouded in mist an even more mysterious feel.
2️⃣ Hekeng earthen building cluster: Compared to the other earthen building clusters, this one is relatively quiet. There are very few tourists during the off-season, making it suitable for a peaceful and slow experience.
3️⃣ Yunshuiyao earthen building cluster: This is the place with the most tourists and relatively the most beautiful scenery. If you want to take good photos, it's best to arrive in the morning.
4️⃣ Shiqiao Village earthen building cluster: There are also fewer tourists here. With small bridges and flowing water, it's more pristine and undeveloped, and no entrance fee is required. Aerial photography is very beautiful here.
🚘Transportation: Self-driving is recommended. Public transportation: From Nanjing High-speed Railway Station, take the 6️⃣ bus on the right-hand side to Yunyao. If you're going to Tianluokeng, get off at the tourist center station and take a scenic shuttle bus. It's hard to hail a taxi within the scenic area. For the return trip, I took a shuttle bus from Tianluokeng, which is specially for villagers, to the tourist center, and then took the 6️⃣ bus to Nanjing Railway Station. (For your reference only)

The 'Four Dishes and One Soup' amidst the misty rain is really beautiful~
Do you remember the 'Four Dishes and One Soup' Tulou in 'Big Fish & Begonia'? They are located in the 'Tianluokeng Scenic Area' in Zhangzhou.
There are 3 angles to view the 'Four Dishes and One Soup', one is from the observation deck overlooking the whole scene, which is also the best angle and position for shooting, another is looking up at the foot of the Tulou cluster, and the last one is to visit the Tulou up close inside.
Due to inconvenient transportation, it is recommended to drive or charter a car to get there. The weather was not bad when we went up the mountain, the eye-pleasing greenery made us feel good, but suddenly the charter driver said, 'Not good, the fog is coming.' Sure enough, the weather turned cloudy and rainy, and the fog became thicker and thicker, which would cause nothing but fog to be seen from the observation deck, completely obscuring the Tulou.
When we reached the observation deck, the Tulou were looming in the mist, visible to the naked eye, but not easy to capture in photos. We were not content to wait on the observation deck for a while, and found that the rain was getting heavier, but the fog was diminishing, so we were able to take the later 'Four Dishes and One Soup' ID photo.
Looking up at the Tulou cluster from different angles didn't require much shooting, but it felt good to walk into the Tulou. Our charter driver knew someone familiar and took us directly into the Tulou without any admission fee. The exterior of the Tulou has a strong sense of life, and the flowers blooming against the distant mountains in the misty rain make the scenery very beautiful. The Tulou in the misty rain are well worth the visit.

A quaint village far from the hustle and bustle in Zhangzhou, Fujian: Taxia Village
This place is part of the Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster scenic area, serving as an essential path to reach the earth buildings. Most people wouldn't pay much attention to it, and we would have missed this pure land of little bridges and flowing water if the owner of the Wenchang Building Homestay hadn't informed us beforehand!
Taxia Village is located at the foot of the mountain of Tianluokeng Tulou. A stream meanders through the middle of the village, with ten stone bridges crossing the river. This 'paradise on earth' is a typical Hakka settlement!
Along the river, the earth buildings are nestled against the mountains and water, with more than fifty square and round Tulous. Yude Building and Shunchang Building are located on both sides of the stream, forming a Tai Chi-like pattern when combined with the stream, and viewed from above, they create an 'S' shape. Hence, Taxia Village is known as the 'Tai Chi water town'.
More than thirty small and exquisite blue brick buildings are scattered throughout the narrow valley, many of which have been transformed into distinctive homestays, integrating into the lives of the local villagers. Perhaps this is the most charming aspect of staying in Taxia Village. Before summer arrives, the firefly forests here also become a scenic highlight! Don't miss it if you're staying at a homestay!
Additionally, Taxia Village boasts intangible cultural heritages such as Hakka puppet shows and Hakka Tulou construction skills

Visiting the Hidden World of the Great Family in the Mountains - Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster
🚙 Setting off from Zhangzhou city, my northern friend and I drove to Nanjing County to visit the famous Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster - 'Four Dishes and One Soup'.
🌴 As we were about to reach Tianluokeng, we turned off the spacious highway onto a winding mountain road, and my northern friend marveled at how green the mountains are in the south.
👉 However, the already narrow mountain road was lined with parked cars, which made us nervous. As expected, it was time to start the holiday mode of searching for a parking spot.
👉 We moved up the mountain at a snail's pace with the traffic flow, and finally, we reached the entrance of the scenic area without finding a place to park. But just then, a car parked by the road drove away, and my easy-going northern friend carried on the excellent Minnan tradition of 'no pain, no gain', saving us from a two-mile walk.
👉 At the entrance of the scenic area, we could look down at the depression where the Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster is located. The Tulou Cluster finally came into view, spectacular and mysterious against its naturally privileged terrain.
👉 The Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, built during the Ming and Qing dynasties, is one of the best-preserved Tulou clusters in Nanjing County. We walked down the steps to the foot of the Tulou, feeling the simplicity and grandeur up close. Inside the Tulou, which is about three or four stories high, the square Tulous mainly have a courtyard layout, while the round Tulous show a unique rotational symmetry structure with crooked wooden stakes. In the center stands a temple, leaving a deep impression. Words like ancient, solemn, crisis, deity, and totem came to mind.
👉 The residents inside the Tulou conduct tourist business while living their daily lives, with dining tables set up outdoors. We ate several dishes cooked by a Hakka grandmother in a round Tulou, which tasted quite good. My northern friend ate two bowls of rice by himself, and the picture shows the local specialty vegetable, Buddha's hand squash. The grandmother also invited us to visit the second and third floors.
🚙 The scenic area is not large, and we finished our visit in less than half a day, including mealtime. Friends with more time can also visit Huaiyuan Lou, Yuchang Lou, and Yunshuiyao. We were already heading towards the sunset at Dongshan Island.

Tianluo Pit, commonly known as 'Four Dishes and One Soup'
Tianluo Pit is quite distinctive among the Fujian Tulou, as from a distance, four round Tulou surround a square one, creating the impression of 'Four Dishes and One Soup'. However, this place is quite remote, and a narrow mountain road leads to heavy congestion during holidays, so we just took a look from afar and left. In fact, there is also a village called Taxia Village below, which is quite nice as well, but overall it's not as good as the Yunshuiyao Ancient Village.
⛰【Travel Tips】
📍Detailed address: Tianluo Pit Scenic Area, Nanjing, Zhangzhou, Fujian.
🚗Transportation tips:
It seems that you can only get there by self-driving or taking a taxi.
🕙Opening hours: Open all day, with inns available.
💰Ticket price: 90 RMB for adults.
🌟Highlights: The most beautiful view is from the observation deck.
📌Little Tips: It's only suitable for viewing from a distance, not as good as entering the Yongding Tulou or the Huaiyuan Building in Yunshuiyao.

The 'four dishes and one soup' of Tianluo Pit, I think, is the most beautiful group of earth buildings
Tianluo Pit earth buildings are located in the deep mountains. Although the journey is long and the mountain road is winding, the newly built mountain road is like a jade belt winding between the green hills, with beautiful scenery along the way, terraced fields are like brocade, and it shines with the surrounding round buildings.
Upon arriving at Tianluo Pit, the most praised is the unique group of earth buildings that look like 'four dishes and one soup'. These buildings are cleverly arranged, following the ancient Yin and Yang and Five Elements cosmology, whether viewed from the top of the mountain or looking up from the foot of the mountain, they all present a shocking visual feast. Tracing its source, the Tianluo Pit earth building group was founded more than 200 years ago and was presided over by an ancestor surnamed Huang.
Coming to the quiet village under the tower, along the stream, the road on both sides is dotted with many round buildings of different sizes and shapes. Many earth buildings are still well maintained and there are still residents living here. Tianluo Pit earth building group Village under the tower

Zhangzhou, Fujian | To see the earthen buildings, you must go to Tianluokeng, a world architectural wonder!
Although there are many earthen buildings in Nanjing, you must go to Tianluokeng! Because the famous 'Four Dishes and One Soup' is here!
Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster, located in Tianluokeng Natural Village, Shangban Village, Shuyang Town, Nanjing County, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province, is situated on the half slope of Lake Dun Mountain at an altitude of 787.8 meters.
The Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster mainly consists of one square building, three round buildings, and one oval building, namely Buyun Building, Zhenchang Building, Ruiyun Building, Hechang Building, and Wenchang Building. The square building Buyun Building is in the middle and the other four are surrounding it, commonly known as 'Four Dishes and One Soup'.
The Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster was built according to the order of 'Gold, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth' in the Five Elements, and it is a world intangible cultural heritage.
The second time I came, it was a rainy day, which had a different flavor. The mountains were greener, the water was more urgent, there were fewer people, and the mist was lingering, as if I was in a fairyland.

Nanjing Tulou Clusters
Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster was something special to see. The tulou or earthen building is a form of communal living which is typical of the Hakka ethnic group.
There’s a dazzling fireworks display at night and many of the residents sell their crafts right outside their quarters.
An unexpected highlight was the tourist office which was constructed in the style of the ancient buildings. See the last two pictures.
If you have the opportunity to visit, don’t miss it! Despite the many visitors, the village never felt crowded and the children were especially cute! #nanjing #nanjingchina #tuloucluster #fujianprovince #fujian #chinatravel

Splendid Tianluokeng Tulou Cluster!
Tianluokeng tulou cluster is one of the most famous clusters of Nanjing county, due to it's very famous and unique configuration. The village itself is quite commercial and used to visitors; there are in fact many restaurants, souvenir stalls and guesthouses inside the tulou and the surrounding buildings. The ticket (which includes 3 scenic spots in the area) is valid for 24h and costs 90rmb.
Even if notoriously commercial, I decided to go to have a look. The choice of going during the Chinese New Year week was not very wise, as I found a lot of crowd and traffic jam on the road to the cluster 😰
My suggestion would be to avoid national holidays and just go during low season if possible.
Nevertheless, the place itself is stunning and worth seeing when in China.
Especially at night or in the early morning (when most of the daily visitors are gone or not arrived yet), Tianluokeng is quiet and enchanting, a joy to be there. To do so, you should definitely spend the night in the area, better if in a tulou house!
And don't forget to bring your drone with you 😎🚁

Tulou villages: my favorite countryside 🌾
China has spectacular vernacular architecture all over the country, and the Tulou houses are definitely one of the most unique and interesting architectural typology of all.
Belonging to the Hakka people, Tulou are huge fortified dwelling meant to host several families belonging to the same clan.
A Tulou is split between families into slices, so that each one owns a piece of every floor.
At the bottom there are kitchen and spaces for the livestock, while on upper floors are storage and bedrooms.
It's difficult to capture in picture how amazing these structures are.
You MUST go and see it with your own eyes!

I believe that people who have traveled to southern Fujian in the southeastern coastal areas know the Tulou buildings in Fujian. The earth building here seems to be very ordinary, but it is very secret in the world of architectural art and magical science. The most magical place in Fujian earth building is that only people living in the earth building will not be damaged if they are in the wind and rain. It has collapsed, and there has never been a collapse of the inhabited earth building for hundreds of years, but as long as no one lives in the earth building, time will soon collapse for no reason. As early as the Tang Dynasty, the Hakkas invented the use of mud to build houses based on the combination of Feng Shui and architecture theory of the motherland, and those living in houses will not be worried about the damage of houses. The most magical place in Fujian Tulou is that only if someone lives in the earth building, the wind and rain will not damage or collapse. The collapse of the inhabited earth building has never happened for hundreds of years, but there is no one in the earth building. Living, time will soon collapse for no reason, is it amazing? Why is the Fujian Tulou inhabited and will never collapse? If you are uninhabited, it will collapse automatically? So with such doubts, I came to see the Tulou Scenic Spot, the most representative of the "four dishes and one soup" in the Nanjing Tulou. Above the inside of the circular earth building is a huge skylight that can store the outside light into the interior of the earth building. The circular design is very consistent with the mathematical theory of our country. I think this design definitely uses a certain theory of mathematics. Because the Tulou building in Fujian will collapse when it is unoccupied, and the earth buildings here are hundreds of years old, it is a cultural relic house. Therefore, in order to avoid the collapse of the precious earth building, the local government funds to attract the elderly to stay here. People who live mainly here will enjoy the government's welfare subsidies. There are such good things in the world. I think everyone will be envious. Why is there such a magical imagination in Fujian Tulou? The inhabited earth building is safe for hundreds of years, and the uninhabited earth building will soon collapse. So far, no scientist has been able to trace the answer. It seems that the wisdom of the ancient Chinese people is unpredictable and can only be summed up by the word "magic". In the traditional Chinese concept, the prosperity of the family is a blessing, and the Fujian Tulou is the guardian of the house for the family who is thriving. Is it a blessing guardian of China since ancient times? In order to avoid the sadness of people going to the empty space, the earth building will also die and live with the popularity of living in the earth building. So it seems that the Fujian earth building is not only the most amazing building in the world, but also the most knowledgeable building. Nanjing Tulou belongs to the township in the county of Nanjing, Cangzhou City. From Xiamen, you can take the bus directly to the scenic spot or take the high-speed train to Nanjing Station to transfer to the scenic area. The ticket is 120 yuan, and the online reservation is 90 yuan.

Most of the people living here are Hakkas, Hakkas have experienced long-distance migration, The earth is built with walls, and it is suitable for the outer shackles. Such a residential building full of Datong ideals, in addition to ethnic consciousness, a strong sense of humanity has also been gathered.
Tulou is based on raw soil as the main building material, mixed with fine sand, lime, glutinous rice, Brown sugar, bamboo chips, wooden strips, etc., are built after repeated twisting, smashing and pressing. The top of the building is covered with fire and tile cover, and it will not be damaged for a long time. The earth building can be up to four or five stories high for three or four generations to live in the same building. . I especially like the red lanterns here, and the days of people here must have been very popular.
The outside of the earth building is the world and the unknown, while the inside is the life and warmth. This kind of earthen building is round and round, and the atmosphere of the neighborhood is unique to us. Here you can see the simple folk customs, the people full of life are full of love for life, and infected with all kinds of tourists.
people here, living here, clothing, food and religion, we can see them most Real life scenarios. Visitors seem to be part of their lives. People coming and going are not enough to disturb their lives. Instead, they will be very enthusiastic to talk to people who come and go.

This time I came to Nanjing and went to the Nanjing Tulou to see the real version of the Shenxian Home in "The Big Fish," and whether it is in the general momentum of the movie. Magnificent, can you find the shock of the soul?
We arrived at the Nanjing Tulou Group Scenic Area. Known as the "flying saucer in the sky, the mushroom growing on the ground", the earth building is located in the rolling hills of the highlands. Here, you can see the unique fabulous mountain village architecture in the world, and enjoy the legendary pastoral town art.
The architectural world of the wonderful "four dishes and one soup", Nanjing Tianluo Hang Tulou group, by step It is composed of Yunlou, Zhenchang Building, Ruiyun Building, Hechang Building and Wenchang Building. It is the landmark building of Fujian Tulou. Tian Luokeng is a subtle combination of one, one, three, and five earth buildings, which can feel the perspective of God. The following is an aerial photograph of "four dishes and one soup".
The earth building is scattered like a jade plate on the green mountains. In the days of March and April, there was drizzle, and the smoke in the distance lingered, such as the jade belt coiled on the mountainside. In this natural oxygen bar, greedily breathe. The patchwork terraces are green and green. I don't know if the earth building is dotted with this land, or the land is used to make the earth building.
