[History and Culture Tour] Reminisce about the place where Katsushika Hokusai grew up, the Sumida Hokusai Museum
"These exhibition areas are under repair. Only the replica area is open for visitors." When I first heard this, I was confused and felt unfair. Why is it that after traveling a long way by subway to Ryogoku and then walking here, all you can see are replicas of Hokusai's Ukiyo-e paintings? It is called the Sumida Hokusai Museum, and I thought it would respect the place where Mr. Hokusai grew up and lived, and collect the most representative paintings.
However, now that we are here, there is no turning back. So I bought a ticket and went in. There is a grass park in front of the art museum, where children and their parents play football, play, jump rope, and run together in the early morning and at noon on holidays. This is very convenient for holiday family trips.
When you come to the exhibition area, some famous paintings will of course be on display. I was particularly impressed by the painting "Dragon Leaping Over Fuji", which is also collected in the Hokusai Museum in Nagano. It is a fusion of ink painting, ukiyo-e, fine brushwork and Western realism, with a transcendent artistic conception. In fact, the so-called Ukiyo-e is divided into brush paintings and printed prints. Most of them belong to the latter, including "The Great Wave" and "The Great Wave off Kanagawa". Therefore, replicas are very common, because as long as there is a template, the same structure can be printed, with only differences in color, layer, material, and age.
Due to his high output, Hokusai's works are scattered in different museums. This time, we will specifically introduce his life, achievements, and creative periods, which will help fans and those who are curious about Ukiyo-e to get a glimpse of the master's growth process, learn from his own creations, and learn more about the master's massive works, genres, and breakthroughs in addition to his masterpieces.
Moreover, after the visit, you can also take a walk around the place where he grew up. As for the reference places, related shrines and deeds of the people in his paintings, you have to go to the Sumida Hokusai Museum to find out!
