Historic buildings
There are more than 700 tombs in the ancient city of Petra, of which the larger one is UrnTomb, which is square, 18 meters high, 20 meters long and 20 meters wide. During the Roman occupation, the vaulted buildings were added below, and the offices and prisons of the judicial officers were set up. In 446 AD, it was changed to the Orthodox Church. From the Erne tomb to the right, there are the Corinthian tomb, the palace tomb and the six-petaled tomb. These five tombs hewn along the mountain are the tombs of generations of kings of the Nahada Kingdom.

The Royal Tombs of Petra
Aside from the more famous sights at Petra, such as the Treasury and Monastery buildings, there’s so much more at Petra to see including the Royal tombs. These amazing structures, up to 46 metres tall almost 50 metres wide are carved out of solid rock. Sadly they don’t get as much attention as the more famous and better preserved neighbours but they are still incredible and well worth visiting.

Important information about Petra

Wonders of the World: Marvel at the Magic of Petra
Petra is an ancient city in Jordan and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World. It is known for the magnificent rock-cut architecture and unique water conduit system, Petra is also known as the "Rose City" due to its distinctive pink sandstone cliffs. Definitely a check off my bucket list.
Getting there - I took a bus/ coach from Amman to Petra early in the morning.
Highlights / Must-Sees - I went to Petra for 2 days straight to see majority of the sites in this ancient city. There are multiple routes and do note that trekking is required for many of the sites higher up the cliffs.
1. Treasury
Highlights - This is the first majestic structure you will see upon entering Petra. My breath stopped for a moment when I first walked in. Known for its elaborate Hellenistic architecture carved into rose-red sandstone, the intricate facades and stunning columns reflects the skills and artistry of the Nabataean people.
2. Monastery
Highlights - This is quite a hike up but totally worth it. It stands about 50m high and has a grand facade with intricate carvings. From monastery area, you can get breathtaking views of surrounding landscape
3. Royal Tombs
Highlights - This is a series of rock-cut burial sites carved into the cliffs. This shows us the architectural skills of the Nabateans.
4. Colonnaded Street
Highlights - In this stretch, you can see impressive columns and this place served as the commercial hub in the ancient city.

Petra's Magnificent Royal Tombs
The Royal Tombs of Petra are ancient Nabataean tombs with impressive monumental facades, including one of the largest facades in Petra. The Royal Tombs are a series of impressive and large mausoleums that have been carved into the Jabal al-Khubtha rock massif. While it is possible that they were tombs for royalty, this can't be proven due to the lack of archeological evidence found in the tombs.
The Palace Tomb is the most impressive of the tombs, with three stories and a facade that resembles a palace. The Urn Tomb is suggested to belong to the Nabataean King Malchus II who died in 70 CE. The Silk Tomb takes its name from the majestic multi-colored layers of rock that appear like a silk drapery over a tomb. The Corinthian Tomb is located north of the Silk Tomb and is one of the most ornate tombs in Petra.
