Since its creation, Rikugien Garden has been counted as one of the two great gardens of Edo along with Koishikawa Korakuen Garden. In 1695, the fifth shogun, Tokugawa Tsunayoshi, bestowed the land of Komagome as a lower residence for the shogun, and Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu himself designed and directed the construction. He dug a pond and built a mountain in a corner of the flat Musashino Plain, and over the course of seven years, he created a "walk-around style garden with a pond and a pond." Rikugien Garden is a delicate and gentle Japanese garden that reflects Yoshiyasu's deep literary knowledge. The name of the garden comes from the "six principles of poetry" in the ancient Chinese poetry collection "Maoshi," namely the classification of "Fu (wind), Fu (fu)), Bi (comparison), Ki (elegance), Miyabi (elegance), and Sho (poetry)" by Ki no Tsurayuki.
