It’s always a wonderful experience going to the annual German Christmas market in Shanghai…it really sets the tone to Christmas,especially being far from home. Apart from little ornaments and gift options being overpriced, the food is always different authentic and affordable. I’m only set to go for the food and mulled wine in recent years because in all honesty the other smaller things can be found on taobao waaaay cheaper(I was disappointed to look some of the things up and see the prices)!…. Getting There - Metro line 2 (Jing’an temple). The temple is next to the subway station. Attractions - Beautiful temple! Cost and opening hours - 50¥ , 7:30-5pm. The temple is perfectly located on West Nanjing road. There are plenty of restaurants and shops near by. I've seen a lot of temples in my time, so I can tell you that Shanghai's Jing'an Temple is truly outstanding. This temple has a history of nearly two thousand years. The architecture is largely built in the Ming style, and the drum tower features a tenon-and-mortise structure, without a nail in sight. The temple is expensive in the most literal sense of the word, with its land valued at 3 billion yuan and construction costs of 2.8 billion yuan. The temple also houses many precious Buddhist artifacts, including a 15-ton pure silver statue of the Buddha, several 3-ton silver statues, a 2-ton pure gold statue, and a thousand-year-old camphor wood statue of Guanyin. Jing'an Temple has a long history, dating back to the 10th year of the Chiwu era (247) during the Three Kingdoms period. It was renamed Jing'an Temple in the first year of the Dazhong Xiangfu era (1008) during the Song dynasty. In the 9th year of the Jiading era (1216) during the Southern Song dynasty, the temple was moved from the banks of the Wusong River to its current location, meaning it predates the founding of Shanghai.
