Among them, the altar is the central building. The halls are built according to the mountain, which is very spectacular. The northwest courtyard has the largest Buddhist altar in China, which is known as one of the three largest Buddhist altars in China along with that of the Kaiyuan Temple in Quanzhou and the Zhaoqing Temple in Hangzhou. Jietai is one of the oldest temples near Beijing. Constructed more than 1,400 years ago, it is an important Buddhist temple. Jietai also is known as the Ordination Altar Temple because it’s where monks and nuns achieved their highest status. Located about 22 miles outside of Beijing, Jietai is affiliated with the Lu Sect of Buddhism and is the largest ordination temple in China. There are a number of halls devoted to Buddhist deities. Check out the vegetation, including five ancient pine trees and the 1,000 lilac trees that offer a fragrant, splendiferous scene in the spring. Lying just to the west of Beijing, Jietai Temple only takes 45 minutes to get to from the center of the capital. Historically, the ancient western roads of Beijing included military routes built by the government, commercial paths for coal transportation and mule caravans, and pilgrimage routes to temples. The existing ruins of these ancient roads stretch nearly 300 kilometers. The Jingxi Ancient Road Scenic Area in Shuiyuzui Village, Miaofeng Mountain Town, is a 3A-rated scenic spot. Besides the 3-li-long ancient road, it also features an ancient road museum and the first pass, Niujiaoling. Additionally, within the Julingxia Scenic Area in Qingshui Town, there's the Lingshan Ancient Road, the starting point for climbing Donglingshan, the "Roof of Beijing." Among the famous western mountains, there are many ancient temples. Within Mentougou, the most worthwhile temples to visit are the 4A-rated Tanzhe Temple and Jietai Temple. Tanzhe Temple, considered the origin of Beijing, was first built during the Western Jin Dynasty's Yongjia period. It's known as the first Buddhist temple in Youzhou and received royal patronage during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The temple boasts numerous attractions, from its architecture to its flowers and trees. Jietai Temple in Yongding Town was built during the Sui and Tang dynasties. The temple houses well-preserved Liao Dynasty Buddhist relics, including pagodas, scripture pillars, and ordination platforms. Five famous pine trees and prestigious peonies add to the temple's allure. Cuandixia Village in Zhaitang Town is Mentougou's most famous scenic spot. This ancient village on the western commercial road was once home to the Han clan. Its well-preserved Ming and Qing courtyard complexes have long been popular among artists and filmmakers. Mentougou's traditional villages are not limited to Cuandixia. Gushan Village, a 4A-rated scenic spot in Miaofeng Mountain Town; Malan Village, a red tourism village in Zhaitang Town; Yanhecheng Village, which originated as a military garrison; Lingshui Village, a 3A-rated scenic spot with eight scenic views; Shuangshitou Village, a stone village in the Cuanbai Scenic Area along with Cuandixia; and Baiyu Village, where ancient military music is preserved, are all worth a visit. The 4A-rated Baqidou Cave, located one li from Tanzhe Temple, is a natural underground labyrinth. Shenquanxia in Miaofeng Mountain Town and Guacaodi Scenic Area in Wangping Town, both with unique geological formations, are known for their icefalls. The fourteen temples on Miaofeng Mountain, led by the Niangniang Temple, have always been popular pilgrimage sites. Even if you're not religious, the area's sunrises, sunsets, unusual pine trees, strange rocks, and thousands of mu of roses are worth seeing. The Cuanbai Scenic Area not only includes cultural attractions like Cuandixia and Baiyu Village but also features the 1,773-meter-high Huangcaoliang and a narrow erosion canyon known as "Yixiantian" (A Thread of Sky). The name of the former Huayan ancestral temple, Baipu Temple in Yanchi Town, reflects its blend of natural and cultural elements. Due to its geographical location and limited transportation, in the past, only a few merchants, soldiers, and pilgrims traveled the ancient western roads of Mentougou. Today, it's no longer remote. A five-yuan ride on the BRT Line 4 from Fuchengmen takes only an hour to reach Dayu Subdistrict, where the Mentougou District government is located. The S1 Line maglev train is even faster. Jietai Temple's architectural layout was formed in the Ming Dynasty. The temple faces east, with two axes running north and south. The main Buddhist buildings are on the south side, and the precept altar courtyard is on the north side. The main buildings include the Mountain Gate Hall, the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the Thousand Buddha Pavilion, the Guanyin Hall, the Nine Immortals Hall, the Mingwang Hall, the Precept Altar Hall, the Arhat Hall, the Great Compassion Hall, and more. The 113 Precept Gods of Jietai Temple, the story behind an old photo💕 🌟The symbol of Jietai Temple - the Jietai is square in shape, with three levels, each with a Sumeru seat. The waist of each seat is carved with many small Buddha niches. The Jietai and small Buddha niches are original Ming Dynasty artifacts. There are 28 on the top level, 36 on the middle level, and 49 on the bottom level, totaling 113 Buddha niches. Inside the Jietai Buddha niches are 113 painted clay Precept Gods. 🌟These Precept Gods are all different, lifelike, and vivid. They were sculpted by the fourth-generation master sculptor Mr. Zhang Ming and his disciples during the renovation of Jietai Temple in 1980. The renovation process was full of twists and turns. The original Precept Gods in the Jietan Hall niche were said to have been destroyed during the Boxer Rebellion. There were no samples during the renovation. Yonghe Palace once had a black and white old photo from the Republic of China period, which had the figure of the Precept Gods. The Precept Gods of the Yonghe Palace Jietai Tower were also destroyed from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China period. Master Zhang Ming created this group of exquisite Precept Gods group statues based on this picture, completing the restoration of Jietai Temple. But this old photo was later lost, which caused difficulties for the later renovation of the Precept Gods of the Yonghe Palace Jietai Tower. Because the statues and Buddha niches restored in Jietai Temple have no names, it is impossible to restore the Precept Gods of Yonghe Palace based on the Precept Gods of Jietai Tower. Even if they are restored, they cannot correspond to the honorifics above the Jietai Buddha niches (the statues and Buddha niches of Jietai Temple have no names, and the Buddha niches of Yonghe Palace have names). In 2022, the Museum Department of the Yonghe Palace Management Office miraculously found this precious black and white old photo while sorting out the old archives of the museum. The photo also lists the Chinese transliteration of the Tibetan names of each statue. Yonghe Palace finally commissioned the National Intangible Cultural Heritage Boxwood Carving Inheritance Institution to use cypress wood, carefully crafted, and completed the carving of all 113 Precept Gods in nearly a year.
