One of the key highlights of our trip to Cairns was swimming at the Esplanade Lagoon. Located in the heart of Cairns’s City next to the waterfront, the Esplanade Lagoon is open to public and free! Simply enjoy the amazing view while strolling along the boardwalk, enjoy a picnic at the lawn next to it or even better take a dip in the water for an enjoyable swim. The view was stunning during the sunset and you would be amazed at the transition of colours during the magic hour! Along the edge of the lagoon, there is a sand area for children to play. The lagoon also has a shallow end with little fountains along the way, as well as 1.55m progressive depth for keen swimmers. After the swim, you can easily take a shower at the toilet and change area which provides warm water. It was clean and comfortable! Then you would be ready for dinner at a nearby waterfront restaurant. Be sure to book the restaurant in advance as popular ones are fully booked quickly and do not take walk-in guests. 🌿 First Impressions: A Slow-Paced Tropical Town Upon arriving in Cairns, I was greeted by the warm sea breeze, with the air filled with a strong tropical vibe. The pace here is more leisurely than I had imagined, without the bustling crowds, but rather a relaxed and free atmosphere. Walking along the Esplanade, watching locals jogging, walking their dogs, and travelers lying on the grass daydreaming, I realized the beauty of this town lies in its simplicity and purity. 🐠 Great Barrier Reef Diving: Entering an Underwater Wonderland A trip to Cairns wouldn't be complete without visiting the Great Barrier Reef. I joined a day tour for snorkeling and diving, taking a speedboat to the outer reef. The clarity of the water was astonishing. The first time I dived into the water, the feeling of weightless floating made me a bit nervous, but as soon as I saw the colorful corals and schools of fish, all my worries vanished. Watching clownfish darting among the anemones and turtles gracefully swimming by, it felt like entering another world. At that moment, I understood why the Great Barrier Reef is considered one of the most beautiful natural wonders on Earth. 🌳 Kuranda Rainforest: Riding a Century-Old Train into the Primal Jungle On the second day, I chose to visit Kuranda, a small town hidden in the world's oldest tropical rainforest. Taking the Kuranda Scenic Railway, I slowly traversed the dense tropical jungle, with breathtaking views of waterfalls and gorges along the way. Upon arriving in Kuranda, I leisurely strolled through the handicraft markets, tasted local coffee and tropical fruits, and even encountered adorable koalas and kangaroos. The highlight was taking the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway back, overlooking the vast rainforest from above, feeling the awe and grandeur of nature. 🌅 A Solo Journey to Truly Listen to Yourself The greatest charm of solo travel is not having to accommodate anyone else, allowing you to explore the world at your own pace. During my days in Cairns, I didn't over-schedule my itinerary, instead giving myself plenty of time to sit by the sea, savor local seafood, chat with locals, or simply watch the sunset quietly. Sometimes, travel is not just about checking off attractions, but about experiencing the moment, immersing yourself in a new environment, feeling, thinking, or simply enjoying the breeze of a tropical sea. This solo trip to Cairns taught me to slow down, listen to my heart, and appreciate the beauty of the world. Because the shores of Cairns are surrounded by crocodiles, there’s no beach for tourists to visit that’s close to the city. Luckily, they’ve set up this huge outdoor public pool near the ocean that can be visited for free. It’s the perfect way to relax for a day before heading out to see the Great Barrier Reef. There are also tons of shops, restaurants and bars nearby to visit once you’ve finished your day at the pool. This wooden plank staircase is probably the most popular photo point in South Australia. There is no specific location for this staircase. Generally, the net red will not tell you where it is. I am lucky enough to find this point on the map. The photo is super nice! This staircase is on the Esplanade in Port Noarlunga South, South Australia, with a parking lot next to it. There is a circular observation deck with a wooden staircase next to it, the stairs leading to the beach, opposite the peninsula called ngangkiparri, not far from the McLaren Valley, you can drop by.
