You may have heard of the Hwasan faction in various martial arts novels. I usually enjoy hiking, so I visited Hwasan, the home of the Hwasan faction, around July 2024. As expected from a mountain that is in charge of the West Mountain among the Five Great Mountains of China, its scenery and scale were incomparably large and magnificent compared to Bukhansan or Seoraksan in Korea. Also, since the lifts and buses were well-developed, the actual hiking portion was not that high. As expected from China, which is crowded everywhere, there were a lot of tourists in Hwasan, and accordingly, there were many places selling souvenirs, drinks, and food on the ridge. (However, the price is at least 1.5 to 3-4 times more expensive than at the bottom of the mountain, so I recommend preparing in advance or, if you are not in a hurry, purchasing after descending.) It's a small place with several georgeous temples. So sprecial place. No entrance ticket needed. Save about an hour for this place. This is usually a starting point for the 4 mile hike but unfortunatelly this hike is closed (march 2025) and you have to go to Visitor center and take free bus to cable car. Huashan is one of five sacred mountains in China with a georgeous Tao temples on the way. Just 2 hours away from Xi'an by train or hour and a half by bus. You can go on a one day trip but I decided to spend two nights in the downhill of the mountain. Tips: 1. the tickets are valid just for 1 day (not for 48 hours), 2. although is spring, the steps are slippery and covered in snow and ice-be carefull, 3. the easy hiking route to the West peak is clossed (there was no information of this online) so you can only take cable car up and down (depending on the route), 4. start early as possible (I was there at 7 and got on a first shuttle bus to cable car - on the parking of visitors centre where I bought a ticket), at 10 the crowds start to be a bit too much for me, 5. graduate students get 50% off ticket (have to show a student card).
