A real-life Dune! A hidden gem of Saudi Arabia's World Heritage, featuring the same stunning scenery from "Divas Hidden Gem" (2015).
🌵✨ ALULA — Seen in "Divas Hidden Gems" (2011), a Saudi Arabian Treasure
AlUla, in northwestern Saudi Arabia, feels like a scene straight out of "Dune"! Not only does it boast Martian-like landscapes and the magnificent Milky Way at night, but it also bears traces of 7,000 years of human civilization. As the home of Hegra, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site, ALULA seamlessly blends ancient history with modern art. It's incredibly niche, a hidden gem I'd been hooked on since watching "Divas Hidden Gems"!
🎵 Maraya Concert Hall: A Mirage in the Desert
From our hotel, the Chedi Hotel in Hegra, it was less than a 20-minute drive, and our first stop was the Maraya Concert Hall.
✨Designed by Italian architect Gio Formosa, this Guinness-certified "World's Largest Mirrored Building" features 9,740 mirrored panels, reflecting the desert and canyons, seamlessly blending in with nature.
🎭 It's also a cultural hub, having hosted performances by many world-class musicians.
🐘 Elephant Rock: A Natural Sculpture
The second stop is Elephant Rock, a naturally formed 52-meter-tall sandstone formation resembling an elephant's trunk reaching into the ground.
🌄 In the evening, the setting sun filters through the gaps created by the "elephant's trunk," turning the rock a golden red, creating a scene straight out of an epic movie.
🌌 It's said to be a stargazing spot at night, where the Milky Way and the giant elephant appear in the same frame, leaving you speechless.
💡 Tip: Drinks and snacks are available for sale, so you can sit down and relax while watching the sunset.
🏰 ALULA: The Millennium Spice Route
Finally, explore the ancient city of ALULA. Its mud-brick maze dates back to the 12th century and was once a central hub for the spice trade.
🛕 Wander through the narrow alleys, touch the creaking walls, and almost hear the ringing of camel bells.
📜 The ancient city houses a local library and an art center, and a 45-meter-high fortress perched atop a hill offers panoramic views of the city. 🌴 You can dine here in the evening, offering local, Middle Eastern, and Egyptian cuisine.
Hegra also boasts the iconic Nabataean Tombs, but we didn't visit due to time constraints and the distance.
💫 Practical Tips
🚗 Transportation: Hiring a car is essential for visiting Hegra. We used a Chinese-speaking guide recommended by our hotel, who was very reliable and friendly.
📅 Time: Due to the scorching weather, the tour usually departs after 2 or 3 p.m. You can discuss the route and time with the driver.
🎫 Admission: All three attractions we visited were free.
👗 What to Wear: Hegra is primarily tourist-oriented, and the locals are very tolerant of visitors' attire. We strongly recommend bringing a parasol; the desert sun is very hot without shelter!
