This simple church, a harmonious combination of stone, brick and paint, is one of the most unique in Aragon and was built on the foundations of an earlier mosque.

Spanish Pyrenees Hike ~ Zaragoza (Region) Construction began with an apse finished in stone, as was common in Romanesque art; but halfway through the work, Mudéjar architects took over and abandoned the stone in favor of the traditional exposed bricks, finishing the church in brick. The church is small, consisting of a single nave, with a chapel on either side of the aisle (14th century), a presbytery house and an apse. The atrium forms the main doorway. Inside, the nave is covered by a wooden roof. The apse is decorated with five blind arches, on the vaults of which there are remnants of some Gothic frescoes (14th century) that once completely covered the apse: a portrait of St. John can be seen, and above it a slender depiction of the Last Supper. #AprilDestinations2025 #SpainTravel #Aragon
