Legend says a tiger once leaped across this narrow part of the gorge 🐅—and honestly, standing there, I could almost imagine it happening! The hiking trail was challenging but unforgettable 🚶♂️💪. Every step offered a new angle of the river cutting through cliffs thousands of meters deep. I stopped many times just to soak it all in—towering mountains above, raging water below, and clouds drifting lazily between them ☁️⛰️. Along the way, friendly locals smiled and greeted me 👋, offering yak butter tea 🫖 and small snacks. Their warmth made the journey even more special. By the time I reached one of the viewpoints, the sun was setting, painting the mountains in shades of gold and pink 🌅. It was one of those rare travel moments when words simply aren’t enough. Tiger Leaping Gorge, Diqing Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province Tiger Leaping Gorge, world-renowned for its dramatic drop in elevation, is located east of Tiger Leaping Gorge Town in Shangri-La County. It is divided into three sections: Upper, Middle, and Lower Tiger Leaping, stretching approximately 20 kilometers. The Jinsha River lies in the middle of the gorge, flanked by the Yulong and Haba Snow Mountains. The river's narrowest point is only 20 to 30 meters, yet the dramatic drop creates a turbulent flow. Tiger Leaping Gorge is also a world-renowned hiking destination, attracting thousands of outdoor enthusiasts each year. Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge is the most visited section. Entering the area from the Shangri-La section requires descending a 100-meter stone staircase. Below, a viewing platform with a transparent floor offers stunning views of the river and Tiger Leaping Rock. Entering from the Lijiang section requires a 2.6-kilometer plank road, which is relatively smooth and offers diverse views of the Jinsha River. Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge is approximately 5 kilometers from Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge. The dramatic drop in the river's surface creates a spectacular spectacle. From Middle Tiger Leaping Gorge, you can cross a slippery slab to enter Lower Tiger Leaping Gorge, a 1-kilometer-deep ravine near the exit of Tiger Leaping Gorge. From plateau snow-capped mountains to canyon rapids, the landscape along the way can be described as “spectacular”. Tiger Leaping Gorge is one of the most classic photo spots in Shangri-La. During this journey, you will not only feel the power of the heart-pounding mountains and rivers, but also see the Yulong Snow Mountain and surrounding Tibetan houses in the distance, satisfying all the "nature control" and "scenery control" at once! Protagonist Appearance - Tiger Leaping Gorge (Shangri-La Section) Tiger Leap Gorge is known as "one of the deepest canyons in the world", with steep rocks and roaring rivers. Walking along the observation deck, you can feel the rushing water of Tiger Leaping Gorge and the magnificent canyon landscape from top to bottom. After my own walk, I just want to keep taking selfies and posting to friends, whether it's sunny or hazy, the scenery is super shocking. The Shangri-La section is relatively less crowded, so it is comfortable to walk and not so crowded. It is recommended to allow 2-3 hours to walk slowly while being careful underfoot, the rocks are slippery in some places along the canyon side. Autumn and winter morning and evening temperature difference is large, remember to bring your own jacket. 🍜 Recommended food around the scenic spot: There are some Tibetan restaurants outside the Tiger Leap Gorge Scenic Area. It is recommended to try authentic flavors such as yogurt, butter tea, and Tibetan pork. It is warm and nourishing.
